  • Zed's Delta now supports @mentions in threads and comments, with OS notifications.
  • Mentioned users get entries in a dedicated Inbox for async triage of agent work.
  • Demo shows opening a mention, spawning a subthread to ask the agent for context, then replying.
  • Subthreads can summarize long teammate threads, a workflow Zed highlights internally.
  • Delta replaces PRs with multiplayer threads backed by DeltaDB, a Git-compatible edit-level layer.
  • Zed has already disabled pull requests on its internal repo, with 570 changes landed via Delta.

Zed has added @mentions to threads and comments in Delta, its environment for coding with AI agents. Tagging a teammate sends an operating-system notification and stores the mention in the recipient’s Inbox for later triage. Developers can route a review or question to a specific person while keeping the conversation and its context in Delta.

Delta is Zed’s standalone app for supervising coding agents and reviewing their work. It organizes development in persistent threads where teammates can watch agents work in real time. Reviewers can also create isolated subthreads that inherit the parent thread’s context. Underneath the app, DeltaDB tracks individual edits while retaining Git compatibility.

A tag becomes a handoff

In Zed’s demo, a developer named Joseph opens a mention, creates a review subthread, and asks an agent to explain the parent thread. He then returns to the parent and posts a comment. The flow connects a notification directly to the relevant code, agent activity, and team discussion.

Because the review subthread carries the parent’s context, the agent can prepare a focused recap without adding catch-up work to the main conversation. Zed says its team frequently uses this pattern to summarize long agent sessions before responding.

Thread-based review gets a queue

Delta uses the thread as its primary unit of work, so teams need a way to assign attention and track pending requests inside that system. Mentions provide three practical controls:

  • Direct assignment: A tag identifies the teammate expected to review, answer, or act.
  • Asynchronous triage: The Inbox keeps requests available after the operating-system notification disappears.
  • Scoped catch-up: A reviewer can ask an agent for context in a subthread and post the resulting decision to the parent.

570 changes through Delta

Zed reports that 33 employees have landed 570 changes to its main branch through Delta threads. The company has disabled pull requests in its internal repository and plans to move internal development fully off GitHub within months. Its public open-source repository continues to accept conventional pull requests.

Members of the Delta beta should receive mentions automatically.
