Zed 1.24 Moves Live Terminal Sessions Directly Into AI Agent Threads
Zed v1.24 ships local Git tag creation, drag-and-drop terminal tabs into the Agent Panel, and smarter File Finder prefill from selections.
- Zed v1.24 adds local Git tag creation via command palette and commit context menus.
- Terminal tabs can be dragged into the Agent Panel, preserving session, title, and shell state.
- File Finder now prefills queries with selected text; toggle with
file_finder.prefill_query_from_selection. - Linux x86_64 binary is roughly 23 percent smaller after debug symbol stripping.
- Git Panel gains file counts, collapsible commit editor, and Gerrit/Gitiles permalink support.
zed --diffon directories now offers a side-by-side view for folder comparisons.
Zed’s 1.24 release, now at version 1.24.2, streamlines three recurring workflows. Developers can create local Git tags, move live terminal sessions into the AI Agent Panel, and seed File Finder searches from selected text.
Tag a commit, push later
The new git: create tag at head command creates a tag on the current HEAD. A matching Create Tag action can tag any selected commit from the Git history view or Git Graph.
Tags remain local until explicitly pushed to a remote. That separation lets developers prepare and verify release tags inside Zed before publishing them with their usual Git workflow, such as git push origin <tag>.
Move a live terminal into the Agent Panel
Dragging an existing Terminal tab into the Agent Panel now converts it into a Terminal Thread while preserving its title, shell history, current working directory, running processes, and other session state.
A developer investigating a failed test can move that exact terminal session into an agent conversation and continue from the existing output. The agent workflow no longer requires a fresh terminal or repeated copying of command output into chat.
Turn selected text into a file search
File Finder now uses selected editor or terminal text as its initial query. Selecting a filename or path in a stack trace before opening File Finder immediately searches for that text.
The previous empty-query behavior remains available by setting file_finder.prefill_query_from_selection to false.
Smaller builds and sharper Git tools
Zed 1.24 also includes several platform, diff, and repository-navigation changes:
- The x86_64 Linux binary is 23 percent smaller, reducing its download size and disk footprint.
- Running
zed --diffwith two directories opens a side-by-side directory comparison. - Git Panel section headers display file counts.
- The commit-message editor can collapse and is configurable through
git_panel.commit_editor. - Gitiles and self-hosted Gerrit can provide permalinks for blame and diff navigation.
- Git Graph displays refs inside the graph instead of placing them in the description column.
- Bug fixes address emoji rendering,
.envfile handling, and several crashes.
Context survives the handoff
The release concentrates on preserving context as work moves between Zed’s tools. Git tagging starts from the commit already in view, terminal sessions retain their live state when moved into an agent thread, and File Finder reuses text already selected by the developer.
Terminal transfer has particular value for AI-assisted debugging because command history, process output, and the active directory remain attached to the session. It aligns with Zed’s broader focus on a native, GPU-rendered editor that combines low-latency editing, collaboration, terminal access, and model-agnostic AI features.
