Sarvam Campus Brings India's AI Unicorn Researchers Directly to Universities

Sarvam, the Bengaluru-based company building India's full-stack sovereign AI platform, just announced Sarvam Campus -- a rolling university tour that brings its founders, researchers, and engineers directly to campuses across India for talks, technical workshops, and live hackathons. The timing is deliberate: the announcement dropped on Independence Day, and the subtext is hard to miss.

The company behind the tour

Sarvam was founded by Dr. Vivek Raghavan and Dr. Pratyush Kumar, who were previously associated with AI4Bharat at IIT Madras. That academic lineage matters here. Vivek brings experience building India's digital public infrastructure, while Pratyush has led the country's open-source AI efforts across Indian languages. These are not career executives -- they are researchers who came out of the university system and are now going back to it.

Sarvam recently announced a $300M Series B, closing the first tranche at $234 million at a post-money valuation of $1.5 billion. The round was led strategically by HCLTech, which committed $150 million, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners and existing investors Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners. Two months after becoming a unicorn, the company is now investing in the next generation of builders.

What Sarvam actually builds

In the last few months, Sarvam has released foundational models, all trained from scratch in India. Sarvam 105B matches or outperforms larger reasoning models on knowledge, reasoning, and agentic benchmarks, while Sarvam 30B is optimized for the edge, running on consumer hardware. The product surface is wide:

• Sarvam's flagship mixture-of-experts models, Sarvam 30B and Sarvam 105B, are competitive with global open and closed source models across a range of knowledge, reasoning, and agentic benchmarks.
• Sarvam's Bulbul text-to-speech and Saaras speech-to-text models are state-of-the-art in Indic voice use cases.
• Sarvam Vision, built for handwriting and Indian-language records, is being used to digitize over 35 million pages from insurance forms to legacy land records.
• The platform natively supports 22 Indian languages along with English.

The scale of deployment is already significant. Sarvam's conversational platform now handles more than 2 million interactions a day, while its speech systems transcribe over 500,000 hours of audio each month. The company's enterprise conversational platform has processed over 140 million conversations, and Sarvam has been selected by the Indian government as its primary institutional bet for a domestic foundation model under the IndiaAI Mission.

Why a campus tour, and why now

The Campus program is not just goodwill outreach. Sarvam is a company that needs frontier AI talent at scale, and India's university system is where that talent is being formed. The company's unicorn milestone has sparked a major hiring wave across the foundation model ecosystem, with Indian tech professionals now looking at high-growth roles in domestic AI development. As of early July, Sarvam's careers page listed 63 active positions -- 25 in engineering alone -- while the company remains a roughly 200-person elite team by design.

The format of the program is hands-on by design. Sarvam says it will bring a full crew to each campus for a full day of talks, technical sessions, and live hackathons -- and give students direct access to its products. The bigger picture for India's AI ecosystem

The founders are united in the conviction that India should not be reliant on imported AI models but must build its own groundbreaking AI infrastructure. Almost all of the dominant AI models are built outside India and predominantly trained on English-language data. The Campus initiative is a direct attempt to build the human layer of that sovereign stack.

There is also a cultural dimension worth noting. For decades, the Indian job market was obsessed with tier-1 tags -- if you were not from an IIT, NIT, or IIIT, your chances of landing a high-paying package were statistically slim. Sarvam's focus on live build challenges suggests that "where you studied" is becoming secondary to "what you can build." A campus tour that reaches universities beyond the traditional elite tier would reinforce that signal loudly.
