Reason Machines Opens a Secret Backchannel So Coding Agents Talk Directly
A free, open-source Rust daemon lets coding agents across different machines discover each other, exchange messages, and coordinate directly over an encrypted P2P link.
- Reason Network is an open-source Rust daemon connecting coding agents peer-to-peer across teammate machines.
- Exposes an MCP server with three tools:
list_team,send_message,check_inbox. - Supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Copilot CLI, opencode, pi and Reason.
- Uses iroh for direct P2P links with encrypted relay fallback; no central server.
- Dual-licensed MIT and Apache 2.0, installed automatically by the Reason CLI.
- macOS menu bar shows who is online; state stored locally in
~/.reason/network.
Reason Machines, the team behind the Reason autonomous engineer, has released Reason Network, an open-source messaging layer for coding agents. It lets sessions running in different clients discover one another, expose their current work, and exchange messages across machines. Teams can use that shared channel to reduce duplicate work, flag breaking changes, and request context from the agent handling a related task.
The Rust project powers the reason network CLI command and supports sessions owned by one developer or distributed across a team. Connections are peer to peer and end-to-end encrypted, with an encrypted relay available when two machines cannot establish a direct route.

Three tools connect eight clients
Every supported agent receives the same small interface through an MCP server named reason-network. Model Context Protocol, originally introduced by Anthropic, gives an agent a standard way to call external tools without requiring a client-specific messaging API.
list_teamlists online teammates, their sessions, and current activity.
