  • pi-mcp-adapter exposes all MCP servers through one ~200-token proxy tool instead of hundreds of definitions
  • Crossed 454K monthly npm downloads, roughly 1.2k GitHub stars, MIT licensed, TypeScript
  • Servers connect lazily on first tool call, disconnect after 10-minute idle timeout, metadata cached to disk
  • Optional directTools promotes 5 to 20 chosen tools into Pi's main tool list at 150-300 tokens each
  • Ships OAuth, headless auth flow, output guard, MCP UI rendering, and Cursor/Claude Code/Codex config imports
  • Limitations: no cross-session server sharing, text-only sampling, per-session process trees

Anyone plugging multiple MCP servers into a coding agent has noticed the same problem: tool definitions are enormous. pi-mcp-adapter is a TypeScript extension for the Pi coding agent that flips the model on its head, exposing every connected MCP server through one lightweight proxy tool and loading the rest on demand. It just crossed 454K monthly downloads and sits at roughly 1.2k GitHub stars under an MCP License.

The context tax nobody wants to pay

Playwright MCP has 21 tools eating 13.7k tokens. Chrome DevTools MCP has 26 tools eating 18k tokens. Connect a few servers and you've burned 30-50k tokens before the conversation starts, whether the agent uses those tools or not, because the schemas sit in the system prompt for the entire session.

Pi's creator Mario Zechner previously argued that MCP might not be worth it, and that plain CLI tools do the job with less overhead. The MCP ecosystem still has valuable integrations though: databases, browsers, APIs. This adapter gives you access without the bloat.

One tool to route them all

Registering hundreds of individual tools with Pi would consume 10,000+ tokens per server. The adapter instead registers a single mcp proxy tool that the LLM uses to discover and call MCP tools on demand. The agent searches, describes, and calls through that one entry point:
