  • Pi Agent Desktop packages the open-source Pi coding agent as a native app for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • Built with Tauri and Next.js, bundling Node.js and the Pi SDK so no terminal setup is required.
  • Features session browsing, conversation branching, Git worktree switching, and file previews for code, diffs, PDFs, and more.
  • Reads existing ~/.pi/agent/ data, so CLI users keep their sessions, models, and auth after installing.
  • MIT-licensed and free to download; you pay only for the underlying model provider.
  • Signed atomic auto-updates ship pi, pi-web, and the desktop shell together to prevent version drift.

Pi Agent Desktop brings Pi out of the terminal

Developer abcwyc has released Pi Agent Desktop, an open-source desktop package for the Pi coding agent. The signed, auto-updating app runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, giving teams a double-click installer instead of a manual Node.js, environment variable, and local server setup. Its repository had 478 GitHub stars.

Pi Agent Desktop bundles the Next.js server, Node.js runtime, and current Pi SDK. Launching the app starts the local server automatically, so users do not need a separate Node.js installation or terminal command.

Pi supplies the agent engine

Pi is an extensible agent harness, meaning it sends requests to a language model, lets the model call tools, and continues the loop until the task is complete. It includes a unified API for providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, along with tool calling, a terminal interface, a coding-agent CLI, reusable skills, extensions, and prompt templates distributed through npm.

Pi Agent Desktop wraps those capabilities in a Next.js interface hosted inside Tauri. Tauri renders the application through each operating system’s web view, keeping the package smaller than desktop frameworks that bundle a full Chromium runtime.
