Perplexity just made its most deliberate move yet into the legal market. The company launched Computer for Counsel, a legal-specific configuration of its Perplexity Computer agentic platform that connects directly to the tools lawyers already live in: case law databases, document management systems, e-signature platforms, and matter management software. The announcement was paired with an invitation-only event in New York's Flatiron district, signaling this is not a soft launch.

What Perplexity Computer actually is

Before getting into the legal angle, it helps to understand what Perplexity Computer is. Perplexity Computer, in the company's words, "unifies every current AI capability into a single system" -- it is a computer-use agent that can execute complex workflows independently using 19 different AI models, even creating subagents to handle specific problems. Think of it less like a chatbot and more like a digital coworker you can hand a multi-step task to and walk away from.

It orchestrates workflows by breaking down user instructions into subtasks, assigning them to the most suitable AI models from a library of over 19 frontier systems such as Claude Opus, Gemini, Grok, and various GPT variants -- handling everything from research and coding to document creation and app integrations, often running in the background for hours.

The legal integration stack

The headline of Computer for Counsel is the partner integrations. Perplexity has wired Computer into the core tools of legal practice:

  • Midpage: Connect Midpage to Perplexity and get source-grounded legal research directly inside the AI assistant, with access to all US case law, statutes, and regulations -- AI agents handle research, review, and drafting, turning results into briefs and memos.
  • Docusign: Docusign's Intelligent Agreement Management (IAM) platform is now available for Perplexity Computer and Computer for Counsel, enabling legal teams and businesses to automate contract workflows with AI. Powered by the Docusign Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, legal teams can set an objective using plain language in Perplexity and Docusign can automate contract work from start to finish.
  • LegalZoom: LegalZoom's services are directly integrated within the Perplexity platform, meaning users can access legal help -- such as document templates, business formation, compliance, estate planning, and ongoing legal support -- seamlessly as part of their AI-powered research workflow.
