OpenBMB Rebuilds ChatDev 2.0 Into a Zero-Code Multi-Agent Platform

ChatDev 2.0 (DevAll) transforms from a software-only agent system into a zero-code multi-agent platform for any complex task, backed by NeurIPS 2025 research.

OpenBMB Rebuilds ChatDev 2.0 Into a Zero-Code Multi-Agent PlatformPRO
  • ChatDev 2.0 (DevAll) is a zero-code multi-agent orchestration platform that goes far beyond its original software-company concept.
  • A drag-and-drop visual canvas lets anyone design multi-agent workflows for data viz, 3D generation, deep research, and game dev.
  • The Puppeteer paradigm (NeurIPS 2025) uses reinforcement learning to dynamically sequence agents, reducing compute costs while improving output quality.
  • A Python SDK (PyPI: chatdev) lets developers run YAML-defined workflows programmatically for batch automation.
  • Supports MCP tool integration and local models via Ollama; free and open-source under Apache 2.0.
  • Key limitations: verbose token usage, maturing docs, and less production polish than commercial frameworks like LangGraph or CrewAI.

ChatDev, the open-source multi-agent framework from OpenBMB that once simulated a virtual software company, has grown into something far more ambitious. ChatDev 2.0, codenamed DevAll, is now a zero-code multi-agent orchestration platform where users can orchestrate multiple AI agents through a visual canvas without writing code, tackling complex tasks ranging from data visualization and 3D modeling to deep research. With over 33,000 GitHub stars and fresh commits as of this week, the project is actively evolving.

From virtual company to general platform

The classic ChatDev 1.0 with its CEO/CTO/Programmer/Tester role-playing paradigm has been moved to a legacy branch for maintenance. That original version was genuinely clever: agents would debate requirements, write code, test it, and document it, all through natural language conversation. But it was locked to software development. In version 2.0, ChatDev introduces the DevAll concept. It is no longer limited to software development but provides a general orchestration framework where users can customize any role, any workflow, and any task scenario.

Three-panel UI that actually makes sense

ChatDev 2.0 introduces a brand-new web interface featuring three core modules: a Tutorial with built-in step-by-step guides, a Workflow canvas where users design multi-agent systems by dragging and dropping nodes, configuring parameters, and defining context flow, and a Launch panel for real-time monitoring of workflow execution with support for human-in-the-loop interactions at critical nodes.

The platform ships with a Python SDK for those who want programmatic control. You define your workflow in YAML, then call it with a few lines:

python
from runtime.sdk import run_workflow
result = run_workflow(
    yaml_file="yaml_instance/demo.yaml",
    task_prompt="Summarize the attached document in one sentence.",
    attachments=["/path/to/document.pdf"],
    variables={"API_KEY": "sk-xxxx"}
)
if result.final_message:
    print(f"Output: {result.final_message.text_content()}")
