OpenAI Gives ChatGPT Pro Subscribers up to $500 in Free API Credits
OpenAI is now bundling monthly API credits into ChatGPT Pro and Business subscriptions, turning consumer plans into a launchpad for building apps and agents.
- Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500/month in free API credits.
- Pro tiers get their plan price back as credit: $100, $200, or $500 monthly.
- Business gets $20 per Standard seat or $100 per Premium seat, pooled, capped at $500 per workspace.
- Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over.
- Claim via ChatGPT billing settings, then create keys through the OpenAI Developers plugin.
- Codex usage is excluded from the credit benefit, a notable gap for coding workflows.
OpenAI has begun giving monthly API credits to eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers, connecting products that previously used separate billing systems. Depending on the plan, an individual or workspace can claim up to $500 per month for model calls through OpenAI’s developer platform.
ChatGPT subscription fees have historically covered chat access, while developers paid separately for API tokens. The credit gives subscribers a recurring budget for agents, internal assistants, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, which attach relevant documents to a model request. OpenAI’s eligibility list currently omits Plus and Enterprise.
Credits track the subscription
| Plan | API credit | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|
| Pro 100 | $100 | $100 per subscriber |
| Pro 200 | $200 | $200 per subscriber |
| Pro 500 | $500 | $500 per subscriber |
| Business Standard | $20 per paid seat | $500 per workspace |
| Business Premium | $100 per paid seat | $500 per workspace |
Pro credits match the plan’s monthly price. Business credits accumulate by paid seat until the workspace reaches $500, which takes 25 Standard seats or five Premium seats. Additional seats do not raise the cap.
Expiration changes the math
- Claim required: The subscriber must claim the benefit and link it to an API organization they own.
- Renewal schedule: Credits arrive when the ChatGPT subscription renews, and the first grant is prorated.
- No rollover: Unused credit expires at the end of each billing cycle.
- Fixed balance: API calls draw down the grant. Usage beyond it follows ordinary API billing.
- No card required: Subscribers can spend the grant without adding an API payment method.
- Codex excluded: The credits do not cover Codex usage.
Claiming the benefit
Eligible subscribers can open billing settings, choose an API organization, and claim the credit. The Developers plugin inside ChatGPT or Codex can then create an API key and start a project tied to that organization.
A sweetener after the Pro reshuffle
The credit arrived after OpenAI revised its upper subscription tiers. At DevDay, the company added a $500 Pro plan above the existing $200 option. It also reduced the $200 plan’s compute allowance from 20 times Plus to 10 times and cut weekly GPT-6 Pro messages from 200 to 100.
The API grant adds a separate pool of metered usage to those plans. A Pro 200 subscriber, for example, receives $200 in monthly API credit that can fund an agent prototype, an internal search tool, or a RAG service.
How far $500 goes
At GPT-6.1 Sol’s current list price, $500 covers roughly 250 million input tokens if the entire balance is spent on input. Real applications also generate output tokens, and agent loops, tool calls, and retrieval steps can produce several model requests for one user action.
A practical forecast is requests × input tokens × input rate + requests × output tokens × output rate, with repeated agent steps counted as additional requests. The available capacity therefore depends on traffic, prompt length, output length, caching, and model choice.
Where the credits fit
- Solo developers: Pro credits can cover recurring experiments and early application traffic.
- Business workspaces: Pooled credits can fund shared internal tools, with five Premium seats reaching the monthly cap.
- Codex users: Codex remains outside the benefit and retains its existing billing model.
- Plus and Enterprise customers: OpenAI’s published eligibility list does not include these plans.
A path from chat to API usage
OpenAI is also matching a tactic used by Anthropic, whose Claude Max plans include $100 or $200 in monthly API credit. Each claimed grant creates an API organization, project, and key that can continue under standard billing after the monthly balance is spent.
Bundling API credit with ChatGPT subscriptions lowers the initial cost of building on OpenAI’s developer platform. With Claude Max offering a similar pairing, subscription-funded API usage has become another way model providers compete for developer workloads.
