Open-Source Zero Lets Developers Run Any AI Coding Agent Locally
Zero is an open-source Go coding agent that runs in your terminal, works with 25+ model providers, and keeps sessions on your disk.
PRO- Zero is an open-source terminal coding agent written in Go, MIT licensed.
- Works with 25+ providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama, and LM Studio.
- Ships both an interactive TUI and a scriptable
zero execheadless mode for CI. - File writes, shell, and network access are permission-gated with a Linux sandbox helper.
- Sessions stored locally, resumable and forkable, never uploaded as telemetry.
- Includes MCP servers, skills, plugins, hooks, subagents, worktrees, and spec-first runs.
A new open-source coding agent called Zero is circulating as a terminal-first alternative to hosted assistants like Claude Code and Cursor. It's written in Go, MIT licensed, and pitches itself around one idea: you pick the model, the machine, and the permission rules, and the agent works inside those boundaries.
Zero runs in your local terminal, inspects repositories, edits files, executes commands, drives browser and shell helpers, and keeps durable local sessions. Most popular coding agents today are tied to a single vendor's model and cloud, which is where Zero's pitch starts to diverge.
Bring your own model, all of them
The headline feature is provider breadth. Zero speaks to OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Mistral, xAI, Qwen, Kimi, GitHub Models, Ollama, LM Studio, and any OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible endpoint. Local runners like Ollama and LM Studio are first-class, so you can drive the same TUI against a hosted frontier model one minute and a quantized local model the next.
Switching happens live. Inside the TUI, /model and /provider flip the active backend, and zero exec --model claude-sonnet-4.5 "refactor the config loader" pins a specific model for a scripted run.
