NVIDIA's TensorRT 11.0 Breaks Inference Pipelines to Force a Cleaner API
TensorRT 11.0 drops legacy APIs, ships multi-GPU inference as GA, and makes strongly typed networks the new default
PRO- TensorRT 11.0 released: Major version bump with breaking API changes, available now via GitHub and
pip install tensorrt - Strongly typed networks are now default: Weak-typing APIs and implicit INT8 calibration (
IInt8Calibrator) have been permanently removed - IPluginV2 is gone: All custom plugins must be migrated to the
IPluginV3interface; NVIDIA provides a migration guide - Multi-GPU inference is now GA: Multi-device inference exits preview, adding AllToAll, Gather, and Scatter collective ops with automatic NCCL fallback
- Transformer improvements: Ragged batching for variable-length sequences, MoE performance gains on Blackwell, and new RotaryEmbedding/RMSNorm ONNX support
- ONNX Runtime ≤ 1.24.4 incompatible: The ONNX Runtime TensorRT Execution Provider cannot compile against TensorRT 11.0 until a new ONNX Runtime release ships
NVIDIA TensorRT just crossed a major version boundary. TensorRT 11.0 is not a routine feature release , it is a deliberate API cleanup that removes years of accumulated legacy surface, promotes multi-device inference from preview to fully supported, and makes strongly typed networks the default behavior. If you have inference pipelines running on TensorRT 10.x, there are breaking changes that require attention before you upgrade.
A decade of cruft, removed
The headline story in TensorRT 11.0 is what was taken out. Strongly typed networks are now the default: weak-typing APIs (setPrecision, setDynamicRange, the per-precision BuilderFlag family) and implicit quantization (IInt8Calibrator) have been removed. The old implicit quantization workflow , where you handed TensorRT a calibration dataset and it figured out INT8 scales automatically , is gone. You now need to insert explicit Q/DQ (quantize/dequantize) nodes into your model, typically using the TensorRT Model Optimizer.
The plugin API also got a hard reset. The entire IPluginV2 family is gone; migrate custom plugins to IPluginV3 with addPluginV3(). This affects any team that wrote custom layers using the old IPluginV2DynamicExt or IPluginV2IOExt interfaces. NVIDIA has published a V2 to V3 migration walkthrough with a side-by-side API mapping to ease the transition.
Other removals worth noting:
- All TensorRT static libraries (
libnvinfer_static.a,libnvonnxparser_static.a, etc.) have been removed , shared libraries only from here on - The TREX engine visualization tool is gone, replaced by Nsight Deep Learning Designer
- Python 3.9 and older bindings are dropped; Python 3.10 is now the minimum
- RHEL/Rocky Linux 8 and 9 RPM packages now depend on Python 3.12
- A large set of legacy built-in plugins (
BatchedNMS_TRT,Clip_TRT,LReLU_TRT, and more) have been permanently removed
