Nous Research Ships Hermes Bot Mode Turning Solo Agents Into a Collaborative RosterPRO
  • Nous Research shipped Bot Mode, replacing Hermes Desktop sessions with a roster of named bots.
  • Each bot is a real Hermes profile with its own chat, model, memory, skills, and avatar.
  • Bots message each other through a persistent Agent Inbox using @mention handoffs.
  • Group rooms support 2 to 6 bots taking up to three serial rounds per message.
  • Per-bot routines run on standard Hermes cron; runs appear in the owner's chat history.
  • Bundled default-on in Hermes Agent v0.20.3, MIT-licensed, no core patches or daemons.

Nous Research just shipped Bot Mode, a feature that reworks how the Hermes desktop app treats agents. It replaces the single-agent session list with a roster of named bots, where each one is a real Hermes profile with its own chat, memory, skills, and pinned model. Build a specialist once, give it a face, and come back to it whenever you need that particular skill set.

The feature originally launched as a one-day public beta plugin created by co-founder Teknium and now ships as a default-on feature inside Hermes Desktop v0.20.3. The standalone plugin repo has been archived, with development continuing in-tree at apps/desktop/src/plugins/hermes-bots/ and issues filed against NousResearch/hermes-agent.

From one agent to a roster

Previously, a Hermes profile was essentially a config bundle you attached to a fresh chat. That same profile now appears as a persistent teammate in a left-side pane. The plugin ships several UI primitives on top of Hermes core:

  • Bots pane with one row per profile showing avatar, latest message preview, and timestamp.
  • New Agent flow to spin up a bot with a name, title, description, model pin, and a custom SOUL.md persona file.
