- Official site is noscribe.de; noscribe.ai is an unrelated paid impersonator.
Sending confidential interviews to a cloud API is a non-starter for a lot of research, journalism, medical, and legal work. noScribe is a desktop app that wraps OpenAI's Whisper, faster-whisper, and pyannote into a single GUI, so you can run high-quality transcription with speaker diarization entirely on your own machine. The project has quietly grown to around 2,100 stars and just shipped version 0.7, which adds a proper batch queue.
The app is free and open source (GPL-3.0), runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, distinguishes between different speakers, and understands around 60 languages. It builds on Whisper from OpenAI, faster-whisper by Guillaume Klein, and pyannote from Hervé Bredin. Originally aimed at qualitative social research, it has picked up users in journalism, medicine, companies, government agencies, and NGOs.
Version 0.7: a queue that actually queues
The headline addition is a job queue. You can line up multiple recordings overnight, which matters because a one-hour file is not fast to process locally. The queue tab lists every job with its state and progress, and you can cancel, restart, or open partial transcripts even if a run errored out mid-way.
