MRepE Steers AI Code Generators Toward Readable Output Without RetrainingPRO
  • Researchers propose MRepE, a multitask representation engineering framework that steers LLM internals to generate more readable code at inference time.
  • The core algorithm, MOC-JPCA, extracts orthogonal steering vectors for three readability dimensions (comment density, naming conventions, cyclomatic complexity) to avoid mutual interference.
  • No fine-tuning or retraining is needed -- steering vectors are injected into transformer hidden states during generation.
  • The paper provides a theoretical analysis of the readability-vs-correctness tradeoff when multiple steering vectors are applied simultaneously.
  • Correctness is benchmarked via pass@1 on HumanEval; readability is measured across the three quantitative dimensions.
  • Code is open-source and available upon request; no public model weights or hosted demo have been released yet.

Everyone building with AI code generation tools knows the frustration: the output compiles, the tests pass, and then a teammate opens the file and has no idea what they're looking at. A new paper from researchers at multiple institutions tackles this head-on, proposing a framework that nudges an LLM toward producing more readable code by directly manipulating its internal activations, not by retraining or prompting it differently.

The gap nobody is fixing

Correctness and readability are key measures of code quality, ensuring functional fidelity and ease of comprehension respectively, yet while most existing research focuses on improving the correctness of LLM-generated code, readability remains under-addressed. This is partly a measurement problem. Traditional studies attempt to relate developers' subjective perceptions of readability to measurable code-level features, and research has shown that code understandability is affected by multiple source-code and documentation-related factors, indicating that readability is inherently multidimensional rather than determined by a single universal criterion.

The practical consequence is real. Comment density varies widely across LLMs, from Claude 3.7 Sonnet's 16.4% to GPT-4o's 4.4%, and the variance in structural metrics suggests that the choice of LLM has significant consequences for a project's long-term maintainability, irrespective of the model's functional performance. Prompting helps somewhat, but it is inconsistent and requires per-preference iteration.

What is representation engineering, and why use it here?

Representation Engineering (RepE) is a technique that controls model behavior by editing its internal activations rather than its weights or inputs. Instead of adapting the inputs or training the weights towards outputs, RepE controls an LLM's behavior by manipulating its internal representations, first identifying how a human-understandable concept is represented in the network's activations, then using that knowledge to steer the model's representations and control its behavior.
