Magpie gives coding agents one local model gateway
Developers who run several coding agents often maintain separate configuration files, API keys, provider SDKs and model settings for each one. Developer yetone’s open-source Magpie project consolidates those controls in a menu bar panel, where users can see each detected agent and switch its active model.
Written in Go and released under the MIT license, Magpie supports macOS, Windows and Linux. The project includes a desktop app, a terminal UI and a command-line interface built on the same core. At publication, its GitHub repository had received about 1,200 stars.
A local gateway bridges four APIs
Magpie runs a gateway at http://127.0.0.1:3425/v1. Supported agents connect to that local address and select models from a shared catalog, while Magpie translates requests and responses between provider formats.
The gateway supports four major protocols:
- OpenAI Chat Completions
- OpenAI Responses
- Anthropic Messages
- Google Gemini
Codex normally sends OpenAI Responses requests, while Claude Code uses Anthropic Messages. Magpie translates those formats along with streaming events, tool calls and reasoning metadata, allowing Codex to call DeepSeek models or Claude Code to call Kimi models without patches to either agent. The project documentation lists the supported translation paths.
Paid seats join the provider list
Magpie can register authenticated Claude Code, ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot sessions as local providers. Other agents can then access the available models through the gateway without placing the same API key in every configuration file.
