Lovable Drops API Key Requirement for Perplexity Web Search in Apps
Lovable's Perplexity connector now works without an API key, letting any app pull cited, real-time web answers via managed billing.
- Lovable's Perplexity connector now works with zero setup via a Managed by Lovable option.
- No Perplexity account or API key required; searches billed to workspace Run credits.
- Managed tier covers Perplexity's Search API only; citations and deep research need your own key.
- Credentials live in Lovable's Connector Gateway proxy, never exposed to deployed app code.
- Perplexity was among first three connectors alongside Firecrawl and ElevenLabs; catalog now near 100.
- Demo app: a live market research dashboard built end to end in Lovable.
Lovable, an AI app-building platform, has added a managed option to its Perplexity connector. Developers can now add current web search to an app without opening a Perplexity account or supplying an API key. Lovable demonstrated the feature with a market-research dashboard that retrieves competitive information on demand.
Each managed search is charged to the workspace that owns the project, with usage recorded under Run credits, according to the Lovable changelog. The change removes third-party credential provisioning from prototypes and internal tools while keeping search usage on the existing Lovable bill.
Pick the right search path
Lovable offers two Perplexity connection modes with different credentials, capabilities, and billing arrangements.
| Mode | Access | Credentials | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed by Lovable | Perplexity Search API | No Perplexity account or API key | Prototypes, internal tools, and basic web search |
| Bring your own key | Search, cited answers, deep research, academic search, and SEC filing search | Perplexity API key | Applications that require advanced research or inline citations |
Managed search still consumes Run credits for every query. Applications that must generate answers with inline citations, conduct deep research, or search academic material and SEC filings need a developer-supplied Perplexity key.
From prompt to proxy
Developers configure the built-in connector from Workspace Settings, and Lovable’s agent generates the integration from a natural-language request.
- Open Workspace Settings and select Connectors.
- Choose Perplexity and select the managed or bring-your-own-key option.
- Describe the search behavior the application needs.
Published applications send requests through Lovable’s Connector Gateway, a server-side intermediary between the generated app and third-party APIs. The gateway holds credentials and manages refresh logic, keeping bearer tokens out of frontend code. Credentials can also be rotated without redeploying the application.
Fresh data without auth plumbing
Adding search to a generated application usually requires authentication code, request formatting, rate-limit handling, and error management before the first result appears. Lovable moves that integration work into the connector layer, allowing builders to test search-driven workflows without writing Perplexity-specific boilerplate.
Centralized billing also broadens who can create these tools. A builder without an existing Perplexity account can publish a working research prototype and pay for its queries through the Lovable workspace.
When the catalog runs out
Perplexity was one of Lovable’s first connectors, alongside Firecrawl and ElevenLabs. The company says it built those initial integrations in three weeks, attracted thousands of users on launch day, and has since expanded the catalog to roughly 100 connectors, with one to three additions per week.
Workspace admins and owners on any plan can also create a connector for an unsupported REST API. The custom-connector setup accepts the request destination, authentication requirements, and optional knowledge files that explain the API’s endpoints and expected request formats.
Where live search fits
Lovable’s market-research dashboard illustrates the core pattern: retrieve current public information during an application workflow instead of relying on a static dataset. Other practical uses include:
- Competitive-intelligence dashboards that refresh on demand.
- Sales-preparation tools that research an account before a call.
- Internal assistants that check current public documentation and policies.
- Content workflows that compare drafts with recent web sources.
- Travel, pricing, and availability tools that monitor frequently changing pages.
Plan for cost, citations, and failure
Every managed call consumes workspace Run credits, so applications should control searches triggered by page loads, retries, and agent loops. Explicit search actions, request debouncing, and caching can reduce duplicate queries when the product’s freshness requirements allow it.
High-volume teams should compare Run-credit spending with Perplexity’s API pricing before choosing a billing path. They should also test latency, empty results, upstream failures, rate limits, and exhausted credits so the interface can recover cleanly.
Web results may lag behind authoritative systems for inventory, prices, filings, or regulated data. Applications that require transactional accuracy should use the relevant first-party API as their source of record and reserve web search for discovery or supporting context.
Lovable’s managed option shortens the path from an app prompt to working web search. The bring-your-own-key mode remains available when an application needs citations, specialized research, or direct control over its Perplexity account.
