Gemini Spark is Google's most ambitious consumer AI product to date: a persistent, cloud-based agent that keeps working on your behalf around the clock, even when your laptop is closed and your phone is in your pocket. Announced at Google I/O 2026, it marks a clear line in the sand between the chatbot era and what comes next. Spark represents a big shift for Gemini, transforming it from an assistant that can answer your questions into an active partner that does real work on your behalf and under your direction.
Not a chatbot. An agent.
The distinction matters. While standard chatbots wait for a prompt, Gemini Spark can take proactive action on your behalf, under your direction , it doesn't just answer questions, it completes multi-step tasks across your applications, making it a true AI agent rather than just a conversational tool. The key word is persistent: unlike the standard Gemini chatbot, which ends when a user closes the tab, Spark persists on dedicated Google Cloud virtual machines, continuing to work when a phone is locked or a laptop shut.
Give it a task and it works in the background 24/7, even if your phone and laptop are turned off. It operates autonomously, but always under your direction , you choose to turn it on, and it's designed to check with you before taking major actions.
How it's built
Gemini Spark was built from Gemini base models and an agentic harness from Google Antigravity. Antigravity is Google's agent-first development platform , think of it as the scaffolding that lets a model plan, break down goals into subtasks, execute code, and take actions across connected tools. Spark connects to Gmail, Docs, Slides, and other Workspace tools through structured API integrations rather than screen-reading, which makes it more predictable than agents that navigate a desktop pixel by pixel.
On the infrastructure side, Spark operates in a fully managed, secure runtime on Google Cloud, and every task executes in a fresh, strictly isolated, ephemeral VM to help ensure data never overlaps between sessions. All traffic routes through a secure Agent Gateway that enforces Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies, while user credentials remain fully encrypted and are never exposed directly to the agent.
