Google Opens Meridian, a Free Bayesian Ad Attribution Tool That Kills Black-Box ModelsPRO
  • Google Meridian is a free, open-source Bayesian Marketing Mix Modeling framework available on GitHub under Apache 2.0.
  • Uses Bayesian causal inference with NUTS sampling to produce full probability distributions over channel ROI, not just point estimates.
  • Supports geo-level hierarchical modeling, experiment calibration, adstock/saturation curves, and reach/frequency analysis.
  • Replaces Google's older LightweightMMM, which is no longer actively maintained; Robyn (Meta) remains the main alternative.
  • Meridian GeoX (geo-based incrementality testing) and Meridian Studio (enterprise Cloud platform) are both coming later in 2026.
  • Requires Python 3.11-3.13, a GPU is recommended, and at least two years of historical data to produce reliable results.

Marketing attribution has always been a mess. Last-click models lie, multi-touch models argue, and proprietary vendor tools cost a fortune while keeping the methodology a black box. Google Meridian is Google's answer: a fully open-source Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) framework that lets any team run production-grade, Bayesian attribution in-house, for free.

The problem it's solving

The widening gap between how media is consumed and how it is measured is the core issue. People see content, remember brands, search later, revisit on another device, or convert offline. That has made last-click reporting less useful for channels built around influence rather than immediate response. Meridian enables marketers to make data-driven decisions and improve performance measurement without relying on third-party cookies.

Most marketing mix modeling in the wild is frequentist linear regression dressed up with channel labels. It produces point estimates, ignores uncertainty, and breaks the first time someone asks what happens if you reallocate twenty percent of paid social to TV. Meridian is built to fix exactly that.

What Meridian actually is

Google Meridian is an open-source MMM framework developed by Google to help marketers measure and optimize media impact. It uses Bayesian inference and geo-level data to forecast ROI, calibrate campaigns with experiments, and analyze reach and frequency. Rather than treating MMM as a black-box proprietary solution, Google has open-sourced the entire framework, including methodology papers and implementation code.

MMM (Marketing Mix Modeling) is a statistical technique that estimates how much each marketing channel contributes to a business outcome, using only aggregated historical data. No user-level tracking, no cookies. It assumes each marketing channel contributes to a business outcome through a combination of direct effect, carry-over from prior spend (adstock), and diminishing returns at higher spend levels (saturation).
