Cohere’s North 2 adds persistent memory and tighter agent controls

Cohere has released North 2, an update to its enterprise agent platform with more than 15 new features. The release adds persistent memory, redesigned multi-step orchestration, reusable agent capabilities, enterprise connectors, private deployment options, and controls for permissions and token spending.

The North platform combines AI models, company data, tool access, and workflow orchestration in one managed system. Cohere says feedback from deployments in finance, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, energy, and government shaped the update, particularly its security and administrative features.

A runtime that carries context forward

North 2’s redesigned agent harness coordinates the tools, skills, and data used during multi-step workflows. A new memory layer preserves context between sessions, allowing an agent to continue work without reconstructing its previous state from the full conversation or source data.

Feature Function
Skills Packages reusable capabilities that agents can invoke across workflows.
Libraries Shares approved knowledge and assets across an organization.
Memory Retains relevant context between agent sessions and workflow runs.
Applications Generates presentations, dashboards, documents, and lightweight applications from natural-language instructions.
Automations Provides a drag-and-drop workflow builder with real-time monitoring.

North 2 can use Cohere’s Command models or customer-selected models, giving teams room to retain existing model investments. Cohere’s announcement does not provide a complete compatibility matrix covering model providers, tool-calling formats, context limits, or supported deployment combinations.

Connectors extend the agent’s reach

North 2 connects agents to collaboration, document, project-management, and development systems where enterprise work already resides. Cohere distinguishes integrations shipping with the release from financial-data connections planned for later availability.

Status Systems
Available integrations Slack, SharePoint, OneDrive, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, Jira, Linear, Notion, and GitHub
Planned financial data PitchBook, Crunchbase, Daloopa, FiscalAI, S&P Global, and FactSet

Because agents inherit access to sensitive business systems, each connector’s authorization behavior matters as much as its availability. Teams should confirm whether integrations preserve source-system permissions, support read and write scopes, record tool activity, and revoke access promptly when an employee’s permissions change.

Private deployment comes with agent-level controls

North 2 supports cloud, on-premises, and fully air-gapped deployment. Those options address organizations that must keep models, prompts, retrieved documents, and generated output inside controlled infrastructure for regulatory or contractual reasons.

North Admin lets administrators apply guardrails to individual agents, define autonomy policies, and require human approval before critical actions. Cohere also lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001 certifications, along with continuing red-team exercises and third-party vulnerability scans. Buyers should verify which products, infrastructure, and operating regions fall within each certification’s scope.

Budgets and hardware enter the control plane

North Admin supports role-based permissions, consumption tiers, and token-spending caps for users and groups. These controls give platform teams a way to contain usage before experimental agents become material infrastructure costs.

Cohere says its models produce more useful output with fewer tokens when trained and deployed on NVIDIA Hopper and Blackwell systems, while increasing tokens processed per second per node. The announcement does not publish benchmark tasks, baseline models, latency targets, batch sizes, or pricing assumptions, so the stated throughput cannot establish a general cost per query.

North targets the gap between copilots and custom stacks

North 2 competes with general-purpose enterprise assistants such as ChatGPT Enterprise and Microsoft Copilot, as well as custom systems assembled with orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex. Its main differentiators are private deployment, model choice, integrated administration, and controls designed for regulated environments. Cohere cites LG CNS and Bell Cyber among its North customers.

Questions to settle during a pilot

  1. Deployment: Does the required cloud, on-premises, or air-gapped configuration support updates, model distribution, monitoring, and every necessary connector?
  2. Model compatibility: Which third-party models are supported, and do they retain full tool-calling, retrieval, memory, and observability features?
  3. Memory governance: How is memory scoped by user, team, agent, and tenant, and how can administrators inspect, expire, export, or delete it?
  4. Authorization: Do connectors preserve source permissions and produce audit records for reads, writes, approvals, and failures?
  5. Workflow reliability: How does the runtime handle retries, duplicate actions, partial failures, timeouts, and human approval steps?
  6. Economics: What are the measured token use, infrastructure cost, latency, and completion rate for representative production workflows?

Availability

North 2 is available now, and existing North customers receive the upgrade. New customers must contact Cohere sales; the company has not published standard pricing.

The release gives enterprises an integrated option for building agents that retain context, cross business systems, and operate inside controlled infrastructure. Production results will depend on how reliably its memory, permissions, and orchestration behave during long-running workflows that span multiple tools and approval boundaries.
