There is something poetic about a company returning to the campus where it was born. Cohere and the University of Toronto have announced a multi-year partnership that will deploy Cohere's sovereign AI platform, North, as the orchestration layer inside U of T's forthcoming enterprise-wide AI system. For Cohere's three founders, Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst, and Ivan Zhang, all former U of T students, this is not just a business deal. It is a homecoming.
What is actually being built here
Cohere's secure, privately deployable agentic AI platform, North, will support coordination of complex tasks across different systems, acting as an "orchestration layer" within U of T's forthcoming enterprise-wide AI platform. Think of an orchestration layer as the conductor of an orchestra: it does not play every instrument itself, but it coordinates when each system acts, what data it touches, and how results get routed back to the user.
North will connect trusted information across university systems, coordinate complex workflows, and help faculty, librarians, staff, and students work faster, access services more easily, and make better-informed decisions, while keeping sensitive data secure and under U of T's control. The scope is broad:
- Teaching and learning
- Research workflows
- Student services
- Administrative operations
- Library and information access
One of the core recommendations of U of T's AI task force is the AI Kitchen, which provides secure environments for AI projects with appropriate data access, vetted AI applications, and technical frameworks for procurement and data handling. Now in its pre-launch phase, the AI Kitchen is engaging with members of the U of T community to understand what tools, products, and services they want to see. In other words, the university is not just flipping a switch. It is building a structured sandbox to test and validate AI tools before rolling them out at scale.
