Claude rebuilds Chrome’s new-tab page overnight
Thariq Shihipar has released ai-newtab, an MIT-licensed Chrome experiment that replaces the default new-tab page with a homepage Claude regenerates each day from recent browsing history. The ai-newtab repository passed 500 GitHub stars within days of its launch.
The project combines Anthropic’s hosted agent runtime with monthly API credits now included in Claude Max and Team subscriptions. Shihipar estimates that each daily generation costs about $0.75, making the experiment practical for subscribers who already have unused credits.
One run, five steps
A scheduled daily run converts recent browser activity into an HTML and JavaScript artifact that Chrome loads as its new-tab page. The workflow has five stages:
- Collect: The project gathers recent browsing-history data for the agent.
- Analyze: Claude identifies recurring topics, sites, and potential widgets.
- Generate: The agent writes the page layout and supporting code.
- Verify: Scripts and tool calls check the generated files inside a sandbox.
- Display: Chrome renders the finished artifact when the user opens a new tab.
The resulting page can contain paper lists, market data, frequently visited communities, or other elements inferred from browsing patterns. Its contents remain fixed between scheduled runs unless the generated client-side code fetches current data.
Reasoning outside the sandbox
Claude Managed Agents provides the hosted infrastructure for the long-running workflow. It separates model orchestration from code execution, reducing the amount of sandboxing, recovery, credential, and tracing infrastructure that the project must implement itself.
