Bartowski Packs Qwen2.5-32B Into a 9GB File for Local Machines
A full set of imatrix GGUF quantizations lets you run Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct locally, from a 9GB phone-friendly build up to lossless 65GB weights.
- Full ladder of 27 imatrix GGUF quants for Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct, from 9GB to 65GB.
- Q4_K_M at 19.85GB is the recommended default and fits a 24GB consumer GPU.
- Apache 2.0 license, 128K context, strong multilingual and JSON output across 29+ languages.
- One-line install via llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio, Jan, vLLM, or Docker Model Runner.
- Dedicated Q4_0_X_X builds target ARM CPUs with i8mm or SVE for substantial speedups.
- For code-heavy work, pair with the Qwen2.5-Coder-32B GGUF, which rivals GPT-4o on code benchmarks.
A practical GGUF ladder for Qwen2.5-32B
Running a 32-billion-parameter model locally usually requires substantial GPU memory, system RAM, or aggressive compression. Bartowski’s GGUF repository packages Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct for llama.cpp-compatible runtimes, with files ranging from a 9GB IQ2_XXS quant to roughly 65GB of sharded F16 weights.
The repository’s Q4_K_M file is the practical center of the range: its 19.85GB weight file can fit on many 24GB GPUs when context and batch sizes remain conservative. Smaller options support memory-constrained systems, while Q6_K, Q8_0, and F16 provide progressively higher fidelity for machines with more capacity.
Hugging Face counters showed roughly 800,000 downloads and 3,600 likes when these figures were captured. The download counter records file requests and may count repeated downloads, automated systems, and partial fetches.
A 32B model in one GGUF menu
The underlying base model card describes an Apache 2.0-licensed instruction model with 32.5 billion parameters and 64 transformer layers. Its architecture uses RoPE positional encoding, SwiGLU feed-forward blocks, RMSNorm, grouped-query attention, and QKV bias.
- Primary workloads: instruction following, mathematical reasoning, code, structured data, JSON generation, and multilingual text.
- Languages: more than 29, according to Qwen.
- Prompt format: Qwen ChatML using
<|im_start|>and<|im_end|>tokens. - Advertised context: up to 131,072 tokens, with generation up to 8,192 tokens.
- Local format: GGUF files containing weights, tokenizer metadata, and the chat template.
The upstream model card notes that sequences beyond 32,768 tokens require YaRN scaling. Deployments targeting longer contexts should verify that the selected llama.cpp build and launch settings apply the intended RoPE configuration, then test retrieval accuracy at the planned context length.
Bartowski generated the compressed files with llama.cpp’s importance-matrix method, documented in the imatrix guide. Calibration data estimates which weights have the greatest effect on model output, allowing the quantizer to preserve more precision where errors are likely to matter most.
