Anthropic's Claude Now Reads and Edits Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic's new Workspace add-on puts Claude in a sidebar beside Docs, Sheets, and Slides, with two-way file editing and approval cards.
- Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid plans, with a sidebar inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
- The add-on reads the open file and edits it in place, with per-change approval cards or an auto-accept mode.
- In Sheets, Claude writes formulas, builds pivots and charts, and can pull ranges into Python for cleanup.
- New Google connectors let Claude create and edit Google files live in a pane beside the chat.
- Limits: 6-minute operation cap, no Firefox, 20 attachments per message, cannot share files or change ownership.
- Install via Workspace Marketplace; Enterprise connectors must be enabled by an owner first.
Claude can now edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic has launched Claude for Workspace in public beta. The integration adds Claude as a sidebar in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, while new connectors let users open and edit those Google files from the Claude app.
Claude enters the file
The add-on places a Claude panel beside the open document, spreadsheet, or presentation. Claude reads the file and writes approved changes directly, removing the need to copy content between a Google tab and a separate chat.
| App | What Claude can do |
|---|---|
| Docs | Edit sentences and headings while preserving nearby formatting. Larger rewrites appear as suggestion cards that users can apply or dismiss. |
| Sheets | Create formulas, pivot tables, native charts, and tabs. For heavier analysis, Claude can process a selected range with Python and write the results back to the sheet. |
| Slides | Build slides with the presentation’s existing layouts and theme, then check for overlapping objects, off-slide content, and unreadable text. |
Approval stays configurable
Claude starts in Ask before edits mode, which presents every proposed change on an approval card with a summary. Users can switch to Accept all edits when they want Claude to complete an entire task without pausing after each step.
Several actions always require manual approval, regardless of the selected mode:
- Inserting a link
- Inserting an image from a URL
- Removing another person’s access
The file enters Claude
The Workspace connectors support the reverse workflow. Claude can create or modify a Google file and display it in a pane beside the conversation, where the user and Claude can edit concurrently.
Pasting a Google file link opens that file in Claude. A generic request for a document or presentation creates a local Claude artifact, so prompts must explicitly request a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide when that file type is required.
The side-by-side editor works in Chrome on the web and in Claude Desktop when its built-in browser is enabled. Enterprise plans disable that browser by default. When the editor is unavailable, the file card provides an Open in Google
link.
Google’s existing sharing permissions govern access. Claude can work only with files the current user can already open.
Each file gets its own context
The sidebar combines the open file with Claude’s other context tools, allowing teams to revise a product requirements document, analyze budget data across several tabs, or assemble a business review from Salesforce records and notes available through Drive.
- A model picker selects the Claude model used for the task.
- Organization connectors can supply context from approved business systems.
- Each message supports up to 20 attachments, with a 30 MB limit per document.
- Web search is available through an opt-in toggle.
- Chat history is stored per file in the current browser and does not sync across browsers or devices.
The beta has hard edges
The initial release omits several administrative and scripting operations. Its main constraints are:
- Claude cannot grant file access or transfer ownership.
- Claude cannot create Google Apps Script triggers or custom menus.
- The sidebar cannot open another Drive file during the current task.
- Each operation stops after six minutes, limiting long autonomous runs.
- Firefox is unsupported.
Anthropic’s two-way bet
Google’s Gemini already operates inside the company’s productivity apps, giving it direct access to the tools many office teams use throughout the day. Anthropic’s release closes much of that integration gap for organizations that prefer Claude’s models, connectors, or enterprise controls.
Anthropic’s design is symmetric: Claude appears inside the Google file, and the live Google file appears beside Claude chat. That structure lets a task move between document editing and broader research or analysis while retaining access to Claude’s connectors, skills, and account controls.
What admins need to enable
Users can install the add-on from the Marketplace listing, while administrators can deploy it through the Google Admin console. Enterprise owners must separately enable the Workspace connectors before users can edit Google files from Claude.
Existing Claude account controls extend to the integration, including the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys through CMEK, and OpenTelemetry audit exports. Enterprise teams using the side-by-side Desktop workflow must also enable Claude’s built-in browser.
