Anthropic's Claude Code Action Hits 8K Stars Automating GitHub Pull RequestsPRO
  • What it is: Anthropic's claude-code-action runs the full Claude Code runtime inside GitHub Actions, letting Claude review PRs, fix bugs, and push commits on @claude mentions.
  • v1.0 is stable: The release unified configuration into a single prompt input and added automatic mode detection, replacing the fragmented v0.x API.
  • Two modes: Interactive mode responds to @claude comments; automation mode runs immediately from a workflow-supplied prompt on any GitHub event.
  • Flexible auth: Supports Anthropic API keys, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry, and keyless Workload Identity Federation.
  • Cost: Roughly $15–$25/month for a small team doing 10–15 PRs/week at Sonnet pricing, plus GitHub Actions runner minutes.
  • Security caveat: Unlike GitHub Copilot, Claude Code has no built-in network firewall -- teams must explicitly allowlist bash commands and restrict permissions via CLAUDE.md.

claude-code-action is Anthropic's official GitHub Action that drops Claude into your pull request and issue workflow. Mention @claude in any comment, and Claude reads your codebase, writes code, runs your tests, and pushes commits back to the branch. It has crossed 8,000 stars and nearly 2,000 forks, making it one of the most-adopted AI coding integrations in the GitHub ecosystem.

More than a chatbot in a comment box

The action runs the full Claude Code runtime inside a GitHub Actions runner with no local installation required, reading your repository files, git history, and diff context. This is not a wrapper or a thin API call. It is the actual Claude Code runtime. The distinction matters: Claude can actually build, lint, and test your project, not just read files and suggest changes in a comment.

The action intelligently detects when to activate based on your workflow context, whether responding to @claude mentions, issue assignments, or executing automation tasks with explicit prompts. That automatic mode detection is new in v1.0 and removes a lot of manual configuration that tripped up earlier adopters.

Two modes, one action

Automatic mode detection means no more manual mode configuration. The action intelligently determines whether to run in interactive or automation mode based on your setup, with a unified interface where all prompts go through a single prompt input and all CLI options through claude_args.

  • Interactive mode -- Claude wakes up when someone mentions @claude in a PR or issue comment, responds in-thread, and can push commits directly.
  • Automation mode -- You supply a prompt directly in the workflow YAML. Claude runs immediately on any trigger (PR opened, issue labeled, cron schedule) without waiting for a human mention.

Here is what both look like in a workflow file:

yaml
# Interactive mode - responds to @claude mentions
- uses: anthropics/claude-code-action@v1
  with:
    anthropic_api_key: ${{ secrets.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY }}
# Automation mode - runs immediately with a prompt
- uses: anthropics/claude-code-action@v1
  with:
    prompt: "Review this PR for security issues"
    anthropic_api_key: ${{ secrets.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY }}
    claude_args: "--model claude-sonnet-4-6 --max-turns 10"
