Anthropic is writing a $150 million check to answer a question the AI industry has mostly sidestepped: what happens to the workers and communities left behind as AI reshapes the economy? The answer, at least for now, is Claude Corps -- a national fellowship program that trains early-career people to use Claude and embeds them inside US nonprofits for a full year, fully paid.
Peace Corps, but make it AI
The structure is deliberately reminiscent of civic service programs. Fellows spend 12 months full-time, in-person, helping host organizations advance their missions. The goal is twofold: host organizations get valuable tools and systems built, and fellows walk away with AI skills that will serve them throughout their careers.
The program is a three-way partnership. Anthropic funds it and leads overall strategy. CodePath -- America's largest provider of collegiate computer science education -- acts as the fellows' official employer of record and leads programming. And Social Finance, a nonprofit and registered investment adviser, handles measurement, evaluation, and will build a longer-term financial vehicle to help the program scale.
The host list reads like a cross-section of American civic life:
- Braven (Chicago, IL) -- helps first-generation and lower-income students land strong first jobs
- Code for America (Oakland, CA) -- uses technology to improve government services
- International Rescue Committee (New York, NY) -- humanitarian aid for refugees and crisis-affected populations
