Alibaba's Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo Slashes Image Generation Steps by 80%
Alibaba's Qwen team shipped an 8-step accelerated version of their 7B open-weight image model, cutting denoising work by 5x while keeping 2K output quality.
- Qwen released Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo, an 8-step accelerated checkpoint of Qwen-Image-2.1.
- Same 7B single-stream DiT architecture, 5x fewer denoising steps than the 40-step base.
- Uses CFG=1 and prefix KV caching to reuse text and reference-image context across steps.
- Hosted Turbo API on Alibaba Cloud Model Studio priced at $0.016 per image.
- Weights ship under Qwen Research License: non-commercial use only, separate license for production.
- Day-one ComfyUI support with BF16 and INT8 quantized variants available.
Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo cuts image generation from 40 steps to 8
Alibaba’s Qwen team has released Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo, an open-weight checkpoint for text-to-image generation and image editing. It reduces the default denoising schedule from 40 steps to 8 while retaining the base model’s 7B architecture. The weights and hosted Alibaba Cloud Model Studio APIs became available on the same day.
- Sampling: 8 denoising steps, down from 40
- Architecture: 7B-parameter, 32-layer diffusion transformer
- Workloads: text-to-image generation and image editing
- Access: downloadable weights or hosted Pro and Turbo APIs
- Hosted price: US$0.016 per Turbo output image at publication
Eight steps on the same backbone
Turbo retains Qwen-Image-2.1’s single-stream diffusion transformer, or DiT. The model processes conditioning and visual tokens in one transformer sequence, while block-causal attention controls which token blocks can exchange information. The release changes the checkpoint and sampling trajectory without introducing a separate model family.
The eight-step path combines a checkpoint-specific sigma schedule, classifier-free guidance set to 1, and prefix key-value caching. A guidance value of 1 removes the extra unconditional prediction used by classifier-free guidance. Prefix caching reuses the unchanged text and reference-image attention state across denoising steps, reducing repeated computation at the cost of additional memory.
The shorter schedule represents an 80% reduction in denoising iterations. End-to-end latency will vary because prompt encoding, image decoding, memory transfers, resolution, caching, and hardware remain part of each request.
Install the scheduler support first
The current integration requires a Diffusers build containing Diffusers PR #14950, which adds support for sampling sigmas stored in the pipeline configuration. At publication, that code was available in the source tree rather than a tagged release.
