Alibaba's Qwen-Image-2.1 Hits 2.1M Downloads as Uncensored Port Targets Consumer GPUsPRO
  • Community port of Qwen-Image-2.1 in GGUF, FP8, NVFP4 and MLX formats, no safety filter
  • Over 2.1 million downloads with Q4_K_M fitting in 4.6 GB of VRAM
  • Base model scores 60.28 on Qwen-Image-Bench, ahead of Nano Banana 2.0 and FLUX 2 Max
  • Ranks #1 open-weight on Artificial Analysis text-to-image and image editing leaderboards
  • Runs in ComfyUI-GGUF (leejet fork required) with text encoder offload to system RAM
  • License is Qwen Research only, so commercial deployments need a separate Alibaba agreement

Unofficial Qwen-Image-2.1 Port Targets Consumer Hardware

An unofficial quantization of Alibaba’s Qwen-Image-2.1 has recorded more than 2.1 million downloads and climbed near the top of Hugging Face’s trending list. The community repository packages the image model in several lower-precision formats, omits the built-in safety checker, and provides files for ComfyUI, Apple MLX, and recent NVIDIA GPUs.

Hugging Face counts file fetches, including possible repeat downloads, so the figure does not represent unique users. It still indicates substantial interest in running Alibaba’s model on locally controlled hardware.

Seven billion parameters, one image pipeline

Alibaba’s upstream release is a 7-billion-parameter, open-weight model for image generation and instruction-based editing. It can also generate and edit images with transparent backgrounds. According to release coverage, Alibaba reports generation times below 30 seconds on an NVIDIA RTX 3090.

Alibaba’s published comparison gives Qwen-Image-2.1 a score of 60.28, ahead of Nano Banana 2.0 at 59.82 and FLUX 2 Max at 55.33. Those results come from the vendor’s benchmark and require independent reproduction.

Artificial Analysis produced a more qualified result. Qwen-Image-2.1 ranked first among open-weight entries in its text-to-image and instruction-editing tests while placing 18th overall on both leaderboards. The rankings position it strongly among downloadable models, with several hosted systems still ahead.

Three hardware stacks, a dozen builds

Quantization stores model weights at lower numerical precision, reducing download size and memory use at a possible cost to image quality. The repository covers three inference ecosystems and includes the supporting text encoder and variational autoencoder, or VAE. The text encoder converts prompts into numerical representations, while the VAE decodes the model’s latent output into an image.
