Replit Canvas just got a meaningful upgrade. What started as a visual design surface for building apps has grown into something closer to a full creative production environment: you can now generate images, produce videos, animate SVGs, and edit multiple design elements at once, all without leaving the workspace. The update is live now and free to start.
From design tool to agentic workspace
Replit Canvas is an agentic design tool and creative workspace that lets users build websites, mobile applications, and marketing assets. Unlike traditional chat-based AI, it provides a spatial environment where users can visually explore design variants, iterate on ideas, and convert mockups directly into functional code or polished digital assets.
The key word here is agentic: Canvas does not just respond to prompts one at a time. This expansion follows the Replit Agent 4 visual design canvas launch, addressing the bottleneck of translating creative mockups into code. The idea is that the gap between "I have a design" and "I have a working app" should collapse into a single step.
What's actually new
Four concrete things shipped in this update:
- GPT-Image 2 for image generation. OpenAI's GPT Image 2 introduced a reasoning model into image generation. Unlike the diffusion predecessors of DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3, GPT Image models are autoregressive with capabilities including image-to-image transformation, advanced photorealism, and detailed instruction following. Replit now routes image generation requests through this model directly inside Canvas.
