Replit Canvas just got a significant upgrade, and it signals something bigger than a feature drop. Replit is no longer just a place to write and ship code -- it's making a serious push to own the entire creative workflow, from first sketch to shipped product, inside a single browser tab.
The chat box is not a design tool
The core insight behind Canvas is simple: iterating on design through a back-and-forth chat thread is fundamentally broken. The best design work doesn't happen in a chat box -- you need space to explore ideas, create variants, and iterate. Canvas is Replit's answer to that: an infinite UI design tool with live app previews, freehand annotations, and agent-generated design variants on one shared spatial board.
Design Mode has been replaced by the Design Canvas -- an infinite board that supports all artifact types, live previews, and direct manipulation tools. This happened with the Agent 4 launch, and the new update pushes Canvas further with richer media generation capabilities and a more polished editing experience.
What's new in this update
The new capabilities include improved canvas interactions and tools, a better mobile experience, and support for image generation with GPT-Image 2, video with Seedance, and animated SVGs. There's also an updated visual editor with multi-edit support, letting you change multiple elements at once instead of hunting them down one by one.
- GPT-Image 2: OpenAI's latest image model, known for strong text rendering and photorealism, now powers image generation directly inside Canvas
- Seedance video generation: You can generate short video clips without leaving the project -- useful for landing page hero sections, product demos, or marketing assets
