NVIDIA's bet on open frontier models just got a significant infrastructure upgrade. Prime Intellect has joined the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, bringing the post-training and reinforcement learning (RL) layer that transforms a capable base model into an agent that can actually complete real-world tasks. The timing is no accident: it lands alongside the public release of Nemotron 3 Ultra, NVIDIA's most powerful open-weight model to date.

A Coalition Built to Challenge Closed AI

The NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition is a first-of-its-kind global collaboration of model builders and AI labs working to advance open, frontier-level foundation models through shared expertise, data, and compute. Announced at GTC 2026, it unites leading global AI research labs to collaboratively develop open-source frontier AI models, challenging the dominance of closed proprietary systems.

Behind the announcement: a massive $26 billion investment over five years and a clear ambition to offer an open, Western-developed alternative to the proprietary models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, as well as to the Chinese open-weight models that now dominate the self-hosted market.

The founding members read like a who's-who of the open AI ecosystem:

  • Black Forest Labs, Cursor, LangChain, Mistral AI, Perplexity, Reflection AI, Sarvam, and Thinking Machines Lab are the founding members -- the latter founded by Mira Murati, who served as CTO of OpenAI until her departure in 2024.
  • Prime Intellect, Nous Research, H Company, and Naver have since joined as additional members.
  • Contributions span multimodal capabilities from Black Forest Labs, real-world coding benchmarks from Cursor, and agentic tool-use and long-horizon reasoning evaluation from LangChain, which reported over 100 million monthly downloads of its AI frameworks.
