OpenAI Codex has a familiar problem for anyone who's used it seriously: you're three hours into a big refactor, the agent hits its rate limit, and the automatic reset fires at 3am while you're asleep. The quota refreshes on OpenAI's clock, not yours. That changes today.
OpenAI is rolling out banked rate limit resets for Codex. A rate limit is simply a cap on how many requests you can make in a given time window. Previously, rate limit resets were rigid and controlled entirely by OpenAI, providing no flexibility for users. Now you can save a reset and trigger it exactly when you need it.
What you get, and how to earn more
OpenAI has launched a flexible rate limit system for its Codex coding assistant, rolling out to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro, and Business tiers. Here's the breakdown:
- All eligible users receive one free banked reset as part of the rollout, while Plus and Pro users can earn up to three additional banked resets through a limited-time referral pilot.
- From June 11 through June 24, eligible Plus and Pro users can invite up to three friends. When an eligible recipient sends their first Codex message, both people receive a banked rate-limit reset.
