The power user problem
The root cause of this restructuring is a usage distribution problem that anyone running a dev team on AI tooling will recognize. P99 power users are achieving significantly larger gains than everyone else, and the gap is growing on an absolute basis as total AI usage grows. AI usage is highly concentrated, with a small share of developers accounting for a disproportionate share of spend.
One developer using Auto mode exclusively might cost $20/month flat. Another manually selecting frontier models for every task could hit $80+ on the same plan. Multiply that variance across 50 seats and the gap between base cost and actual bill becomes a CFO conversation. Two usage pools instead of one
