# Zed 1.5 Fixes the Small Coding Frictions That Slow Developers Down

> Zed v1.5 ships a rewritten Mermaid renderer, LSP-powered clickable document links, and sidebar thread renaming for the agent panel.

The team behind [Zed](https://zed.dev/releases/preview) has cut version 1.5 of its Rust-based editor, a weekly preview drop that focuses less on flashy AI features and more on the small frictions that pile up across a day of coding. The headline trio: a faster Mermaid renderer, clickable document links surfaced by language servers, and the ability to rename agent threads without leaving the sidebar.

## Mermaid that keeps up with you

Zed has supported Mermaid diagrams inside markdown previews for a while, but rendering was slow on complex graphs and occasionally produced mangled output. This release improves Mermaid diagram rendering speed and accuracy, and a related fix addresses a crash when rendering Mermaid diagram flowcharts with deeply nested subgraphs. If you keep architecture sketches or sequence diagrams alongside your code, the preview now iterates closer to keystroke speed.

## Language servers get clickable

The more interesting addition for anyone who lives in spec files is document-link support straight from the LSP. Zed added support for clickable document links provided by language servers. The practical payoff, as the Zed team illustrates: `cmd-click` a `$ref` inside an OpenAPI JSON spec and jump directly to the target schema, the same way you would chase a function definition in source code. The behavior is on by default and can be turned off with `"lsp_document_links": false` for anyone who finds the extra underlines noisy.

## Agent panel cleanup

The agent side of Zed has been iterating fast, and 1.5 smooths a few of the rougher edges. Threads can now be renamed directly from the sidebar, which matters once you have a dozen long-running debugging sessions and need to actually find one. Thread renaming now lives directly in the sidebar, which saves time when tracking down specific debugging sessions or feature requests without scrolling through chat history. File paths wrapped in backticks are clickable again, opening the exact line referenced by the model instead of forcing a manual search through the project tree.

A few smaller but useful agent additions:

- The Skill Creator can now import skills directly from GitHub Markdown URLs.
- New commands open the global and project-specific `AGENTS.md` rule files.
- Fast Mode (priority service tier) is now available for OpenAI models through both the ChatGPT subscription and direct API providers.
- The Zed-hosted model list refreshes automatically, no editor restart required.

## Git, Helix, and the long tail

Outside the agent, the release tightens up Git workflows and a few editor modes. Worktree creation now fetches the latest origin/main before spinning up the new environment, which prevents stale references from breaking local branches during active development. The commit message editor supports zoomable text and a dedicated buffer font size setting, making it easier to read long descriptions without squinting or relying on external tools. Remote development gets proper support for local features inside dev containers, so developers working in isolated environments do not lose basic functionality when switching contexts. Bitbucket, Codeberg, Forgejo, Gitea, and GitLab remote providers now show their own icons instead of generic placeholders.

Helix mode users get a handful of binding fixes, including swapping `q` and `Q` so they record and replay macros per Helix defaults rather than leaking Vim bindings. There is also one breaking change worth noting if you have customized your install: support for ACP extensions has been removed, and existing ACP extensions will be migrated to ACP servers provided by the ACP registry.

## How to grab it

Zed remains free to download, with paid tiers for hosted AI usage. The v1.5 builds are available on the [preview channel](https://zed.dev/releases/preview) for macOS, Windows, and Linux, alongside the full changelog and patch releases 1.5.1 and 1.5.3 that follow up with Copilot Chat and worktree fixes. If you are on the stable channel, the same changes will roll out shortly through the standard [release](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/releases) cycle.
