# xAI Open-Sources Grok Build, Its Rust-Powered Terminal Coding Agent

> xAI dropped the full Rust source for its terminal coding agent under Apache 2.0, exposing the agent loop, tools, and extension system.

xAI has open-sourced [Grok Build](https://github.com/xai-org/grok-build), the Rust code behind the `grok` command line coding agent. The release lands under Apache 2.0, and the repository ships the full agent harness, the terminal UI, and the tool layer that the official CLI runs on top of.

Grok Build is xAI's terminal-based AI coding agent, a full-screen TUI that reads your codebase, edits files, executes shell commands, searches the web, and manages long-running tasks. If you have used Claude Code, Codex CLI, or OpenCode, the shape is familiar, though this is the first-party version from xAI, powered by Grok 4.5.

## Three ways to drive it

The harness exposes the same runtime through three entry points, which matters if you want to move from experimentation to automation without rewriting glue code. An interactive TUI covers day-to-day use, a headless mode handles scripting and CI, and editors can embed the agent through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP).

Getting it running is a one-liner if you just want the binary, or a `cargo build` if you want to inspect what actually ships:
