# Vectorize's Hindsight Hits 94.6% Memory Benchmark, Doubling Rivals' Scores

> Hindsight is an open-source agent memory system that hits 94.6% on LongMemEval, beating every competitor with a biomimetic four-strategy retrieval architecture

[Hindsight](https://github.com/vectorize-io/hindsight), the open-source agent memory system from Vectorize, has crossed 16,900 GitHub stars and is now running in production at Fortune 500 companies. The core pitch is simple but ambitious: most agent memory systems help agents **remember**, but Hindsight is built to make agents **learn**. That distinction shapes every architectural decision in the project.

## The problem every agent builder hits

AI agents forget everything between sessions. Every conversation starts from zero , no context about who you are, what you've discussed, or what the assistant has learned. This isn't just annoying for users. A memoryless agent can look cheap at first because the architecture is simple. The real cost shows up later in repetition, weak continuity, and work that never compounds , paid in user time, repeated prompts, debugging cycles, and lower trust rather than one obvious infrastructure bill.

The naive fix is to stuff conversation history into the context window, but that breaks down fast. GPT-4o's 128K context window holds about 1.3% of a 10M-token history. Gemini 1.5 Pro's 2M window holds 20%. Even the largest context windows available today top out well below what you'd need. An agent operating at that volume has no choice but to retrieve selectively, and the quality of that retrieval is what separates functional memory from broken memory.

## Four retrieval strategies, running in parallel

The core of Hindsight's architecture is a retrieval system called **TEMPR** (Temporal, Entity, Multi-hop, Parallel Retrieval). Instead of a single retrieval paradigm, it runs four parallel strategies against every query: semantic search, entity-based retrieval, temporal filtering, and graph traversal. The results are merged and ranked before being returned to the agent. After merging, results are reordered using reciprocal rank fusion and a cross-encoder reranking model.

![Hindsight TEMPR parallel retrieval architecture with four search strategies feeding into fusion and reranking](https://github.com/vectorize-io/hindsight/raw/main/hindsight-docs/static/img/recall-operation.webp)

Why does this matter? Consider the four retrieval strategies that Hindsight runs in parallel: semantic search, entity-based retrieval, temporal filtering, and graph traversal. Three of those four are not vector similarity. Entity-based retrieval is structured lookup against an entity table. Temporal filtering is a range query over timestamps. Graph traversal is recursive walks over edges. A pure vector database can only do the first one well.

The empirical payoff is stark. Hindsight publishes a 94.6% score on the LongMemEval benchmark, which tests long-term memory retrieval across a range of query types including temporal, multi-hop, and knowledge-update scenarios. An independent evaluation measured Mem0 at 49.0% on LongMemEval , a significant gap that reflects the structural limitation of single-strategy retrieval on diverse query types. The benchmark performance data for Hindsight has been independently reproduced by research collaborators at the Virginia Tech Sanghani Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics and The Washington Post.
