# USB-Uncensored-LLM Turns Any Thumb Drive Into an Offline AI

> USB-Uncensored-LLM lets you run abliterated Gemma and Qwen models from a thumb drive with zero install, zero internet, and zero traces left behind.

[USB-Uncensored-LLM](https://github.com/techjarves/USB-Uncensored-LLM) is a new open-source project that turns any USB 3.0 drive or portable SSD into a self-contained, fully offline AI assistant. Plug it into any Windows, Mac, or Linux machine, run a single script, and a local chat interface opens in your browser. No Python installation, no package managers, no admin rights, no internet. When you unplug, nothing stays on the host machine.

## The problem it solves

There is a real difference between "local" and "portable." A local setup is tied to one machine. A portable setup lives on an external drive and works on whatever computer you plug it into. That distinction matters more than it sounds. Imagine sitting in a client's office with no Wi-Fi, a locked-down corporate laptop, and a deadline. Every cloud-based AI tool is completely unreachable. A portable SSD with a local LLM can have you generating clean output in under two minutes.

For anyone who has worked on projects where sending data to OpenAI or Anthropic's servers would have violated contractual obligations -- NDAs, data residency requirements, HIPAA-adjacent sensitivity -- these situations are not rare. By 2025, 44% of organizations identified data privacy and security as their top barrier to adopting LLMs. A USB drive that runs inference locally and leaves no trace is a direct answer to that.

## How it works under the hood

The project ships with portable Python and isolated engine binaries. No system permissions, registry edits, or package managers are required. Under the hood, it runs a custom-compiled build of **Ollama** \-- the popular open-source LLM runtime -- stored entirely on the drive itself. A smart `Shared` volume system lets you download your 5GB+ AI models once and use them natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux without duplication.

The folder structure is clean and purposeful:

```
[Portable USB Drive]
 ├── Linux/      # Launchers for Ubuntu/Debian
 ├── Mac/        # macOS installers and start scripts
 ├── Windows/    # Windows batch menus
 └── Shared/
      ├── bin/        # Ollama binaries per OS
      ├── chat_data/  # Persistent conversation history
      ├── models/     # GGUF model weights
      └── python/     # Isolated Python environment
```
