# Runway's GWM-1 Cuts MIXI's 21-Day Video Production Down to Three

> Runway partners with MIXI to deploy AI video tools across Japan's gaming giant, cutting production timelines from weeks to days

[Runway](https://runwayml.com/news/runway-and-mixi-announce-strategic-partnership) has announced a strategic enterprise partnership with [MIXI](https://mixi.co.jp/en/), one of Japan's largest gaming and entertainment companies, deploying Runway's AI video and world model tools across MIXI's entire creative organization. The deal is more than a licensing agreement: the two companies plan to jointly explore how Runway's emerging world models can power entirely new kinds of gaming, animation, and interactive experiences.

## The two companies at the center of this

Runway is an AI video-generation startup valued at $5.3 billion, having raised $860 million in total since its 2018 inception. The New York-based company describes itself as an applied AI research company building world models for universal simulation, as well as video generation models used by tens of millions of consumers and enterprises.

MIXI is a key player in Japan's digital entertainment sector, best known for its mobile game Monster Strike, having evolved from social networking roots to include a variety of digital entertainment, sports, and lifestyle services. Monster Strike has achieved over $11 billion in gross revenue, with 99% originating from Japan. MIXI currently has a market cap of around $1.08 billion and trailing 12-month revenue of $1.14 billion.

The key voices on the deal: Tatsuma Murase, Director and Senior Executive Officer at MIXI, and Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and co-CEO of Runway.

## What changed, and how fast

MIXI had already been using Runway internally before this announcement. The partnership formalizes and expands that relationship, and the production numbers are striking:

- A video production for the Traditional Chinese version of Monster Strike that would previously have required 21 days was completed in just three days, entirely in-house.
- A brand film that would have taken 20 days with traditional tools was produced in seven, with a hybrid creative pipeline combining live action and generative video.
- Visual proposals for character animations, in-app effects and screen transitions can now be created in as little as five minutes, compared with a process that previously took several days.

These are not marginal improvements. Collapsing a 21-day production into three days is the kind of efficiency that restructures headcount decisions and shipping cadences across an entire studio.

## Japan is already Runway's third-largest market

This deal didn't happen in a vacuum. Runway recently announced its expansion into Japan, opening a Tokyo office as its Japan headquarters and committing an initial $40M to build its presence in the country. Japan has been one of Runway's fastest-growing markets even without a major commercial presence. It is Runway's third-largest market among both enterprise and self-serve customers, and the company has seen 300% growth in enterprise customers in the past 12 months.

Runway's co-CEO Valenzuela has specifically called out Japan and other key Asian markets as global leaders in robotics, manufacturing, and gaming -- industries where world models have an enormous role to play -- framing the Asia investment as a direct reflection of that opportunity. Other Japanese enterprise customers already on the roster include Yamaha, SoftBank Corp., and NHN PlayArt.

## The world model angle is the real story

World models -- AI systems that build an internal representation of an environment and use it to simulate how that environment evolves over time -- are Runway's core research bet. Think of them as AI that doesn't just generate a video clip, but understands the physics, cause-and-effect, and spatial logic of a scene well enough to simulate it interactively.

Runway's first general world model, GWM-1, is an autoregressive model built on top of Gen-4.5. It generates frame by frame, runs in real time, and can be controlled interactively with actions like camera pose, robot commands, and audio. GWM-1 comes in three variants: GWM Worlds for explorable environments, GWM Avatars for conversational characters, and GWM Robotics for robotic manipulation.

Runway describes this as "general world models" -- a set of models that are interactive, real-time, and immersive. For a gaming company like MIXI, the implications are significant: instead of hand-crafting every animation, in-app effect, and character transition, teams could eventually prompt a world model to generate and simulate those elements on demand.

The launch of GWM-1 places Runway in direct competition with efforts from major AI labs such as Google's world model projects, including systems like Genie-3. World Labs, a company led by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, is reportedly seeking up to $500 million at a valuation of $5 billion, and offers its own world model called Marble. The race to own the world model layer of the AI stack is very much on.

## Who wins from this

The most immediate winner is MIXI's creative workforce. Faster production cycles mean more content ships, and the teams that learn to direct AI pipelines become more valuable than those who don't. For MIXI as a company, Japan's population decline presents major challenges including labor shortages and a shrinking domestic market -- AI-driven production efficiency is a direct hedge against that structural pressure.

For Runway, MIXI is a marquee reference customer in a market it is actively trying to dominate. Japan has driven a third of Runway's sales volume in Asia overall, and a high-profile partnership with a publicly traded Japanese gaming company signals to the broader Japanese enterprise market that Runway is serious and here to stay.

The competitive pressure lands on traditional game production studios and animation houses in Japan. The combination of low birthrates and an aging population means there will be fewer young professionals entering the workforce -- making AI-driven innovation essential for sustaining growth in the Japanese entertainment industry. Studios that don't adopt similar pipelines will find themselves at a cost and speed disadvantage.

## What comes next

The partnership announcement does not include disclosed financial terms or a formal equity component -- this is an enterprise deployment deal with a joint research collaboration layer on top. The more interesting forward-looking piece is the joint exploration of world model applications for gaming and interactive experiences. Runway's stated goal is a set of models that are interactive, real-time, and immersive -- ones that can generate and simulate entire environments, and allow users to participate and have conversations with characters in those worlds.

If that research matures, MIXI -- with its 65-million-user Monster Strike franchise and deep anime IP -- becomes a natural first testing ground for what AI-native game experiences could look like. The partnership gives Runway a real-world laboratory inside one of Japan's most sophisticated entertainment companies, and gives MIXI a front-row seat to the technology that could define the next generation of interactive media.
