# Prime Intellect Joins NVIDIA's Nemotron Coalition to Build Open Agentic AI

> Prime Intellect joins NVIDIA's Nemotron Coalition, contributing 2,500+ open RL environments to turn Nemotron 3 Ultra into a fully customizable open agent platform

NVIDIA's bet on open frontier models just got a significant infrastructure upgrade. [Prime Intellect has joined the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition](https://www.primeintellect.ai/blog/nemotron-coalition), bringing the post-training and reinforcement learning (RL) layer that transforms a capable base model into an agent that can actually complete real-world tasks. The timing is no accident: it lands alongside the public release of Nemotron 3 Ultra, NVIDIA's most powerful open-weight model to date.

## A Coalition Built to Challenge Closed AI

The NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition is a first-of-its-kind global collaboration of model builders and AI labs working to advance open, frontier-level foundation models through shared expertise, data, and compute.
Announced at GTC 2026, it unites leading global AI research labs to collaboratively develop open-source frontier AI models, challenging the dominance of closed proprietary systems.

Behind the announcement: a massive $26 billion investment over five years and a clear ambition to offer an open, Western-developed alternative to the proprietary models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, as well as to the Chinese open-weight models that now dominate the self-hosted market.

The founding members read like a who's-who of the open AI ecosystem:

- Black Forest Labs, Cursor, LangChain, Mistral AI, Perplexity, Reflection AI, Sarvam, and Thinking Machines Lab are the founding members -- the latter founded by Mira Murati, who served as CTO of OpenAI until her departure in 2024.
- Prime Intellect, Nous Research, H Company, and Naver have since joined as additional members.
- Contributions span multimodal capabilities from Black Forest Labs, real-world coding benchmarks from Cursor, and agentic tool-use and long-horizon reasoning evaluation from LangChain, which reported over 100 million monthly downloads of its AI frameworks.

Members collaborate on the development of an open model trained on NVIDIA DGX Cloud, with the resulting model open sourced to enable developers and organizations worldwide to specialize AI for their industries and domains. The first model built by the coalition will underpin the upcoming NVIDIA Nemotron 4 family of open models.

## The Model Underneath It All

Nemotron 3 Ultra, a 550 billion parameter open-weight model announced at Computex 2026, went live on Hugging Face on June 4. It scores 48 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index -- the highest of any US-built open-weight model ever released -- and runs at over 300 tokens per second, three to six times faster than comparable Chinese models available through commercial APIs today.

![Comparison table showing NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Ultra performance metrics across Frontier Smart benchmarks against competing models](https://www.primeintellect.ai/blog/nemotron-coalition/jensen.png)

Nemotron 3 Ultra is an open frontier-reasoning and orchestration model with 55B active parameters out of 550B total, using a mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture.
MoE means only a fraction of the model's parameters are activated per token, making inference dramatically cheaper than a dense model of equivalent size.
It features a 1M-token context window
and
ranks #5 out of 123 models in instruction following benchmarks with an average score of 96.

Nemotron 3 Ultra sits on the Pareto frontier for performance versus time per task
in agentic evaluations -- meaning it delivers the best tradeoff between speed and quality for long-running agent workflows.
SWEBench Verified scores land between 65% and 70.4% across Pi, OpenHands, Hermes, OpenCode, and Mini SWE Agent
-- consistent performance regardless of which agent framework you deploy.

## What Prime Intellect Actually Brings

The hard problem in agentic AI right now is not building a smart base model -- it's turning that model into something that reliably completes tasks in a specific domain. That requires RL environments: software sandboxes that define a task, provide tools, and score the model's performance. Prime Intellect has spent the last year building exactly this infrastructure.

Their contribution to the coalition covers four main areas:

- **The Environments Hub** --
2,500+ RL environments with 400+ contributors, spanning software engineering, terminal, browser and computer use, tool calling at scale, long-context reasoning, math, science, competitive programming, cybersecurity, data analytics, and robotics simulation.
- **The [verifiers framework](https://github.com/PrimeIntellect-ai/verifiers)** --
a library for creating environments to train and evaluate LLMs. Environments contain everything required to run and evaluate a model on a particular task: a dataset of task inputs, a harness for the model (tools, sandboxes, context management), and a reward function or rubric to score the model's performance. Environments can be used for training models with RL, evaluating capabilities, generating synthetic data, and more.
- **Prime Sandbox runtime**, integrated with [NeMo Gym](https://github.com/NVIDIA-NeMo/Gym) -- giving teams a secure execution environment for code and tool use during RL training.
- **Prime Intellect Lab** -- a hosted post-training loop that lets any team take a Nemotron model and specialize it on their own workflows and data.

Critically,
everything ships Apache-2.0 / CC-BY-4.0, released in lockstep with the Nemotron model drops.
Open weights get open environments.

## The Bigger Picture: Who Wins, Who Loses

The real story here is about who controls the post-training stack.
As commercial labs recognize the power of RL environments for improving model capabilities, a market for proprietary, closed-source environments is emerging. Without a robust open alternative, open models could lag behind, leaving users reliant on closed models whose capabilities are shaped by inaccessible tools.
Prime Intellect's Environments Hub is a direct counter to that trend.

For enterprises, the implications are concrete. Teams in software engineering, financial services, data analytics, and scientific research can now plug proprietary data into open environment templates -- including inside their own VPC or on-prem deployments -- keeping data sovereign while getting the full coalition recipe. This is a meaningful unlock for regulated industries that can't send data to third-party APIs.

The losers are the closed-model incumbents.
DeepSeek and Kimi have dominated open-weight leaderboards for most of 2026, and Nemotron 3 Ultra is NVIDIA's most direct challenge yet.
And on the proprietary side,
the two models currently at the top of the frontier -- Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5 -- are proprietary, API-only, and priced accordingly.
A coalition-backed open alternative with a continuous improvement loop changes the calculus for any enterprise evaluating build vs. buy.

## What Comes Next

Nemotron 4 is the next generation. It will be the first model produced by the coalition, co-developed by Mistral AI and NVIDIA, with contributions from all members.
No release date has been announced yet.
In the meantime, Prime Intellect is actively scaling the number of high-quality open RL environments for Nemotron post-training, with a continuous improvement loop already running in production.

For teams who want to get involved today, the path is clear: contribute environments at the [Prime Intellect Environments Hub](https://app.primeintellect.ai/dashboard/environments), or use Prime Intellect Lab to post-train a Nemotron model on your own workflows with day-zero support on Blackwell hardware. The coalition has made the open agent platform real -- now the question is how fast the community fills it in.
