# Perplexity Drops $25M in AI Credits on 100,000 Small Businesses

> Perplexity is handing $250 in Computer credits to as many as 100,000 SBA loan recipients in a $25M push to put agentic AI into small business hands.

Perplexity is pulling small businesses into the agentic AI era, and it is doing it through a federal backdoor most AI labs ignore. The company has launched the [Main Street AI Accelerator](https://main-street-ai-accelerator.pplx.app/) in collaboration with the U.S. Small Business Administration, committing $25 million in credits for its Perplexity Computer agent platform. The program offers $250 each to roughly 100,000 eligible companies that have taken SBA-backed financing, timed to America's 250th anniversary.

The eligibility list is narrow on purpose. Credits go to recipients of SBA 7(a) loans, 504 loans, and microloans, three of the most widely used federal small business financing programs. Applications are not yet open, and Perplexity is collecting interest signups on the program site.

## What $250 actually buys

To understand the offer, it helps to know how Perplexity Computer is priced. Computer launched on February 25, 2026 at $200 per month as part of the Perplexity Max subscription tier, and Max subscribers receive 10,000 credits per month, with each task burning credits based on how many sub-agents spawn, which models handle each step, and how many iterations the orchestrator runs. A $250 grant therefore lands somewhere between a free month of Max and a healthy top-up on credits for a heavier user, enough for a small business to actually try the product without committing budget.

That matters because Computer is not a chatbot. It is a multi-agent system that can reason, research, write code, build products, delegate tasks and run workflows without human input at each step. Under the hood it coordinates 19 different AI models, using Opus 4.6 as its central reasoning engine, Gemini for deep research, Grok for fast lightweight tasks, and ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall. For a 10-person operation with no IT team, that is the closest thing to hiring a junior analyst.

## Riding a piece of legislation

The announcement is not happening in a vacuum. It rides the AI for Main Street Act, the bipartisan law that designates AI adoption as a priority service area for the Small Business Administration and forces budget and staffing decisions to account for AI-related support. The roughly 1,000 SBDCs operating across all 50 states, plus the SCORE mentorship network and Women's Business Centers, will be required to develop AI-specific programming.

Perplexity rolled the accelerator out at its [Main Street AI Summit](https://www.unite.ai/apollo-and-perplexity-partner-to-bring-ai-powered-sales-workflows-directly-into-business-operations/) in Washington, D.C., a co-branded event with the SBA. The optics are clear: while OpenAI and Anthropic chase Fortune 500 logos, Perplexity is grabbing the distribution channel Congress just funded.

## A bundle, not just credits

The accelerator is part of a broader push around [Perplexity Computer for Growing Businesses](https://www.perplexity.ai/enterprise). At the same summit, Perplexity announced a deal with Apollo that bakes Apollo's sales intelligence platform into Perplexity Computer, letting founders and revenue teams move from research to execution without constantly switching between applications. Apollo brings a database of more than 230 million business contacts, which becomes meaningfully useful when an agent can actually act on it.

The pitch to a small business owner becomes concrete. Hand the agent a customer list, ask it to enrich the records, draft outreach, file the follow-ups in a CRM, and produce a weekly summary. The partnership addresses what Perplexity calls operational fragmentation, where startups and small revenue teams manage prospecting, customer research, CRM updates, campaign planning, content creation, and customer follow-up across multiple disconnected tools, each workflow requiring manual movement of information.

## Why Perplexity, why now

This is also a defensive move. Perplexity hit $500 million in annualized revenue in April 2026, but its competitors are doing the same dance with deeper pockets. By anchoring itself to SBA distribution channels and the 7(a) and 504 loan ecosystem, Perplexity gets a customer acquisition funnel that ChatGPT Enterprise sales teams cannot easily replicate.

For the businesses themselves, the calculation is straightforward. Small businesses that lag in AI adoption face competitive pressure from larger competitors using AI to reduce costs, personalize customer experiences, and accelerate decision-making, plus a talent retention challenge as employees gravitate toward employers who give them AI skills, plus an opportunity cost in the efficiency gains AI-enabled competitors are capturing. A $250 credit will not solve that, but it removes the excuse not to try.

## The catch worth flagging

Applications are not live yet, and Perplexity has not published timing for when SBA loan recipients can claim credits, how verification will work, or whether the company will offer onboarding support to non-technical users. There is also a structural question about what happens when the credits run out. Bonus credits expire 30 days after they are granted and are consumed first before monthly credits, which means a one-time $250 grant could disappear in a month of real use, leaving the business with a $200 per month subscription decision.

The Main Street accelerator is a small line item against Perplexity's overall burn, but it could quietly become the most important enterprise distribution channel the company has. If even a fraction of the 100,000 target businesses convert into paying Max subscribers, the program pays for itself many times over. If they do not, Perplexity still walks away with the federal partnership and the data on how non-technical operators actually use agentic AI in the wild.
