# OpenMontage Turns a Text Prompt Into a Finished Video for Under $2

> OpenMontage turns any AI coding assistant into a full video production studio with 12 pipelines, 52 tools, and a free path to real motion footage

[OpenMontage](https://github.com/calesthio/OpenMontage) is a new open-source framework that does something the current crop of AI video tools does not: it treats video production as an end-to-end pipeline problem rather than a single-prompt generation problem. You describe what you want in plain language, and your AI coding assistant , Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf, or Codex , handles research, scripting, asset generation, editing, and final composition. The result is a finished video file, not a raw clip that still needs hours of manual work.

## The gap it fills

Most AI video tools give you a single clip from a prompt. OpenMontage gives you an end-to-end production pipeline , the same structured process a real production team follows, automated by your AI agent. That distinction matters a lot in practice. Generating a 5-second clip with Kling or Runway is easy. Turning a topic into a researched script, voiced narration, timed B-roll, royalty-free music, burned-in subtitles, and a rendered MP4 , without touching a timeline editor , is a completely different problem.

Most "free AI video" stacks quietly mean "animate still images." OpenMontage can do that too, but it can also build a finished video from real footage pulled from free/open sources, ranked semantically, edited intentionally, and rendered as a proper timeline. That real-footage path , pulling from Archive.org, NASA, Wikimedia Commons, Pexels, and Pixabay , is what separates it from the Ken Burns-over-stills approach that most open-source video tools default to.

## How the architecture actually works

OpenMontage is built around what it calls an **agent-first architecture**. There is no traditional code orchestrator. Instead, the repo ships a three-layer knowledge system that teaches your AI assistant how to produce video like a professional:

* **Layer 1 , Tools and pipeline manifests:** 52 Python tools (video generation, image creation, TTS, music, subtitles, enhancement, analysis) and 12 YAML pipeline definitions that describe what stages to run and in what order.
* **Layer 2 , Skills:** Markdown instruction files that tell the agent _how_ OpenMontage wants each tool used , quality bars, conventions, and creative decision rules.
* **Layer 3 , Technology knowledge packs:** Deep provider-specific knowledge (how to prompt Kling, how to use Remotion's spring animation system, etc.) that the agent reads before writing prompts or calling APIs.

Agentic pipeline orchestration uses YAML manifests and Markdown skill files to guide AI agents through a structured research-to-render workflow, ensuring consistent execution of scripting, scene planning, and asset retrieval without manual intervention. Every pipeline follows the same staged flow:
