# OpenAI Codex Lets Developers Bank Rate-Limit Resets on Their Own Schedule

> OpenAI's Codex now lets users pocket rate limit resets and spend them mid-sprint, not at 3am when no one's awake

[OpenAI Codex](https://openai.com/codex) has a familiar problem for anyone who's used it seriously: you're three hours into a big refactor, the agent hits its rate limit, and the automatic reset fires at 3am while you're asleep. The quota refreshes on OpenAI's clock, not yours. That changes today.

OpenAI is rolling out **banked rate limit resets** for Codex. A rate limit is simply a cap on how many requests you can make in a given time window. Previously, rate limit resets were rigid and controlled entirely by OpenAI, providing no flexibility for users. Now you can save a reset and trigger it exactly when you need it.

## What you get, and how to earn more

OpenAI has launched a flexible rate limit system for its Codex coding assistant, rolling out to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro, and Business tiers. Here's the breakdown:

- All eligible users receive one free banked reset as part of the rollout, while Plus and Pro users can earn up to three additional banked resets through a limited-time referral pilot.
- From June 11 through June 24, eligible Plus and Pro users can invite up to three friends. When an eligible recipient sends their first Codex message, both people receive a banked rate-limit reset.
- Do the math and a Plus or Pro user can bank up to four resets -- one free plus three from referrals.
- Banked rate-limit resets are usable for 30 days after they're granted.
- Business administrators have a separate Codex referral program based on usage credits rather than individual resets, which runs until August 1, 2026.

The Codex changelog introduced "rate-limit reset banking" with one free reset granted at launch. If you haven't redeemed yours, the option appears in the Codex CLI when you hit the cap, or via the `codex /reset` command if you are on CLI version 0.135 or later.

## The problem this actually solves

Codex usage is governed by limits that depend on the user's plan and the work being performed. Long sessions, large repositories, and agentic tasks can consume the available allowance much faster than a short coding question. This is the core pain: the usage model was designed for interactive chat, not for the multi-hour autonomous coding sessions Codex is increasingly used for.

The community has been vocal about this since at least April 2026. Users documented unpredictable reset schedules, quota drops that didn't match their usage patterns, and the general annoyance of having their workflow interrupted by an arbitrary timer. On April 2, OpenAI tied Codex consumption to tokens, on April 9 it overhauled the entire counting system, and on April 28 it cleared the limits of all paid plans as a one-off goodwill gesture after weeks of protests on the official developer forum. The banked reset system is the more durable answer to that feedback.

## Where it fits in a crowded market

By March 2026, Codex had grown to more than 3 million weekly active users, up from 2 million just weeks prior -- a 50% jump in under a month -- with usage in tokens growing more than 70% month over month. That kind of growth puts real pressure on the rate-limit architecture, and it also puts pressure on OpenAI competitively.

Codex competes in an increasingly crowded space where GitHub Copilot, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini Code Assist, and a growing roster of open-source alternatives are all fighting for developer mindshare. The banked reset feature is a direct quality-of-life response to that competition. OpenAI says the change is a response to user demand for more flexibility, but it's also a sign of the AI price wars likely brewing with Anthropic.

## The fine print

OpenAI has ruled out paid tiers: resets cannot be bought, they are received at launch or earned through invitations. OpenAI has not disclosed future methods for earning resets after the referral pilot ends. However, analysts speculate that the new infrastructure opens up possibilities for OpenAI to monetize Codex by offering standalone resets and bundles to developers.

The practical advice is simple: don't let your free reset expire. Instead of receiving extra usage at a time chosen by the company, users can now bank a reset and activate it before a large code migration, an intensive development sprint, or a task that requires several agents. Stack your referrals before the window closes, and fire the reset at the start of your next heavy session -- not in the middle of one.
