# NUS's ASTRA Edits Entire Crowds in Video Without Any Training

> A training-free framework tackles multi-subject video editing by aligning multimodal prompts and retargeting masks to eliminate attribute leakage across instances.

Video editing tools have gotten scary good at swapping a single subject, but the moment you try to transform four dogs, seven athletes, or a crowd of runners in the same clip, most methods fall apart. Edits bleed across instances, masks tangle at boundaries, and the model forgets which prompt belongs to which subject. A new framework called [ASTRA](https://github.com/XWH-A/ASTRA), from researchers at the National University of Singapore and Nanjing University of Science and Technology, tackles this without any fine-tuning.

## Why crowded scenes break video editors

Existing methods focus on single or few subjects and struggle in complex, multi-subject scenarios. In dense scenes with heavy occlusions, current approaches suffer from severe mask boundary entanglement and attention dilution, leading to attribute leakage and temporal instability. In plain terms, two things go wrong at once:

* **Attention dilution**: the text prompt gets spread thin across many subjects, so no single instance receives strong enough conditioning to be edited faithfully.
* **Mask boundary entanglement**: per-frame instance masks overlap or jitter under occlusion, and the model paints attributes onto the wrong subject.

Transform four dogs into robot wolves and you get one dog with a metallic head, another that reverts halfway through the clip, and background pixels flickering where they shouldn't.
