# MPCoT Lets Robots Think in Parallel Without Slowing Down

> MPCoT runs multiple reasoning paths in latent space simultaneously, letting VLA robots think harder at test time without generating a single extra token

Getting a robot to reliably complete a long sequence of tasks -- pick this up, move that, open the drawer, place the object -- is one of the hardest open problems in robotics AI. [MPCoT](https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.06245), a new paper from researchers at Boston University and Tsinghua University, proposes a surprisingly clean solution: instead of making the model generate more text to reason, run multiple reasoning hypotheses in parallel through the latent space, score them with a reward signal, and blend the best ones before producing an action.

## The wall every VLA hits

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models integrate visual perception, natural language understanding, and robotic action into a unified framework, enabling machines to perform complex tasks in dynamic, unstructured environments. The promise is enormous, but the execution gap is real. VLAs exhibit diverse failure modes during deployment, such as imprecise grasping, task progression failure, and collision with surrounding objects.

The root cause is architectural. VLA policies remain brittle in long-horizon and high-uncertainty control, where one-pass action decoding provides limited inference-time deliberation. In other words, the model gets one shot to look at the scene, process the instruction, and spit out an action -- no second-guessing, no backtracking. For short tasks this is fine. For a 10-step kitchen sequence, small errors compound fast.

The obvious fix is to add chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning -- the same technique that dramatically improved LLM performance on math and coding. But explicit chain-of-thought can increase reasoning depth, but introduces token latency and an indirect text-to-action interface. Generating text tokens at every step adds latency that is incompatible with real-time robot control, and bridging from natural language back to continuous motor commands is its own messy problem.

There has been a paradigm shift toward fine-tuning VLAs for multi-step reasoning with chain-of-thought and aligning VLAs with preferences -- but beyond pre-training and post-training, less attention has been paid to scaling the amount of compute used during deployment, as VLA models are typically designed to generate a single action chunk per observation. MPCoT attacks exactly this gap.
