# Monash's TriAlign Fixes AI Fairness Gap That Gives Some Users Wrong Answers

> TriAlign uses multi-agent RL to ensure personalized LLMs give equally accurate factual answers across all demographic groups, without sacrificing customization

When you ask a personalized AI assistant to solve a math problem, the answer should be the same whether the model thinks you are a 5-year-old or a PhD. The style might differ, but the underlying truth should not. A growing body of research shows this is not how things actually work: personalized large language models adapt responses to users' preferences and social attributes, but can introduce substantial universal truth inconsistencies across social groups, where some groups systematically receive less accurate responses on objective tasks. One study found that the same LLM achieves only 54% universal truth accuracy for Trump supporters, compared to 62% for Obama supporters. That is not a style gap. That is a fairness problem.

A new paper from Monash University and the Defence Science and Technology Group in Australia takes direct aim at this issue. The team introduces [TriAlign](https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.01755), the first training-based framework specifically designed to close factual accuracy gaps across demographic groups in personalized LLMs, while still preserving the personalization that makes these systems useful.

## Why prompting alone keeps failing

The standard playbook for fixing persona-induced bias has been prompt engineering: tell the model to ignore demographic attributes, or add a neutrality instruction at inference time. Prompting only steers surface-level generation behavior without explicitly modifying demographic correlations encoded in model parameters. As a result, these methods often yield only marginal improvements and mainly remain effective for very large models (e.g., 72B parameters). For smaller, deployable models, they barely move the needle. Worse, prompting-based debiasing may reduce the influence of personas or encourage overly neutral responses, which can lower personalization quality. You fix one thing and break another.

The deeper issue is that existing alignment methods either ignore personalization or mainly focus on subjective preference alignment, largely overlooking fairness and consistency in universal truths. The field has been optimizing for "does the model match the user's style?" without asking "does the model give the right answer to all users?"

## The problem, formally stated

The paper formalizes this as **Truth-Invariant Alignment (TIA)**: the goal of ensuring that a personalized LLM's factual answers are equally correct across all social groups, even as the presentation of those answers varies. A social group here is any demographic category-value pair, like `(gender, female)` or `(education, primary)`
