# Microsoft's Playwright-CLI Gives AI Coding Agents Cheaper Browser Vision

> Microsoft's Playwright team shipped v0.1.9 of playwright-cli with new commands built specifically for coding agents that drive browsers from the terminal.

Microsoft's Playwright team pushed v0.1.9 of [playwright-cli](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright-cli), adding a batch of commands aimed squarely at coding agents like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot. The release gives agents cheaper, more structured ways to see and confirm what they are doing in a browser, without dragging a full accessibility tree into the model's context on every step.

If you have not run into it before, playwright-cli exposes Playwright's browser automation as terminal commands (`open`, `click`, `fill`, `snapshot`, and friends) that an agent can call directly. The pitch on the repo is blunt: the team argues CLI plus SKILLS fits modern coding agents better than [Playwright MCP](https://github.com/microsoft/playwright-mcp), because CLI invocations avoid loading large tool schemas and verbose accessibility trees into the model context on every turn. MCP still wins for long-running autonomous loops that want persistent state, but for a Claude Code session juggling a codebase, tests, and a browser, tokens matter.

## Commands agents actually asked for

The headline additions in v0.1.9 close the gap between what the agent thinks the page looks like and what is actually there:

* **highlight** draws a persistent overlay on an element ref, with optional custom CSS via `--style`
