# Google's Magenta RealTime 2 Turns AI Music Generation Into a Live Instrument

> Google's Magenta RealTime 2 is a free, open-weights 2.4B model that generates live stereo music from MIDI, text, and audio with just 200ms of latency — on a MacBook.

Most AI music tools work like a vending machine: you put in a prompt, wait a few seconds, and get a finished audio file back. That model is fine for background tracks, but it has nothing to do with how music actually works. While the offline workflow is fantastic for generating background music for videos or sampling textures for production, it completely ignores the fundamental nature of music itself , music is inherently interactive, performative, and instantaneous. Google's Magenta team just shipped a model that treats generation more like playing an instrument.

Exactly one year after the first Magenta RealTime, Google released Magenta RealTime 2, an open-weights music model that does not generate tracks for you to download after a few seconds of waiting, but responds while you play. Move a controller, change a word in the prompt, hit a MIDI key, and the sound shifts in roughly 200 milliseconds , the difference between giving a command to a machine and improvising with a musician.

## The only open model of its kind

At the time of release, Magenta RealTime 2 represents the only open-weights model supporting real-time, continuous musical audio generation with low-latency control (\~200ms). It is an open-weights model from Google's long-running Magenta research team that lets musicians run live, low-latency music synthesis directly on a MacBook , no cloud, no TPU, no dedicated hardware required. The model weights are free under a CC-BY 4.0 license, and the codebase is Apache 2.0.

The model is 2.4 billion parameters and comes bundled with a C++ inference engine, a Python library, and a set of ready-to-use applications that can drop into a digital audio workstation (DAW) or run standalone. There is also a smaller 230M parameter version for lower-end hardware. You can grab the weights on [Hugging Face](https://huggingface.co/google/magenta-realtime-2) and the full codebase on [GitHub](https://github.com/magenta/magenta-realtime).

## A 15x latency reduction , here's how

The original Magenta RealTime already did streaming generation, but it operated on 2-second chunks. That chunk size created a hard floor on how quickly the model could respond to user input. MRT2 enables low-latency, real-time AI music performance on standard laptops by removing cloud dependency. But the real engineering story is the move from chunk-level to frame-level autoregression.
