# Google Brings Gemini Into Apple's Foundation Models and Xcode 27

> Google brings Gemini cloud models into Apple's Foundation Models framework and Xcode 27, letting iOS/macOS developers swap on-device and cloud inference with a single API.

At WWDC 2026, Google and Apple quietly dropped one of the more consequential developer integrations of the year. Apple developers can now securely call cloud-hosted Gemini models using the Foundation Models framework, and access Gemini in Xcode. For iOS and macOS developers, this changes the calculus around building AI-powered apps: you no longer have to choose between Apple's compact on-device models and a fully separate cloud backend.

## A new door opens in the Foundation Models framework

The key architectural move here is Apple opening its [Foundation Models framework](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/FoundationModels) to third-party cloud providers. Starting with the upcoming iOS 27, macOS 27, iPadOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27 releases, Apple is opening up its Foundation Models framework to third-party cloud providers via a new public `LanguageModel` protocol. Think of this protocol as a common socket: any model provider that implements it can plug into the same native Swift API that Apple's own models use.

This provides a fully native development experience -- cloud-hosted Gemini models can plug directly into the Foundation Models framework using the same API. That means the on-device Apple model and cloud-hosted Gemini models sit behind a shared API surface, so you can easily swap between local and cloud inference to fit your use case. This flexibility is crucial for enabling optimal agentic app experiences while minimizing costs and reducing latency.

It is worth being precise about what this is and is not. Apple has confirmed the end result is pure Apple technology and code. When you interact with Apple Foundation Models, you never touch a drop of Google code, Gemini agents, or even Google Search. It's Apple software all the way down. Gemini is available as an opt-in cloud provider for **your apps** -- it is not baked into Apple Intelligence or Siri.

## Firebase is the plumbing

This integration leverages Firebase, Google Cloud's client apps development platform. It's based on [Firebase AI Logic](https://firebase.google.com/products/firebase-ai-logic), a production-grade service that lets you integrate the latest Gemini models directly into your iOS, macOS, iPadOS and visionOS apps without needing to build and maintain a separate backend server. By using Firebase App Check, your service APIs, like those used to access Gemini models, are protected from abuse.

For existing Foundation Models users, the migration is minimal. If you're already using Apple's Foundation Models framework, switching to Gemini models is a small code change: swap the model instance. The rest of your app logic stays the same.

## Gemini lands inside Xcode 27

The second part of the announcement is a native coding assistant. Google worked with Apple to integrate Gemini into Xcode so you can perform complex, multi-step tasks during development without switching tools or windows. To get started, onboard through the Intelligence settings panel in Xcode. Once configured, Gemini provides an agentic experience, helping you review code, fix bugs and build new features faster.

This is not a simple autocomplete. Developers can use Gemini to accelerate software development by handling complex multi-step coding tasks, generating code suggestions, explaining project structures, debugging issues, and assisting with implementation planning. Xcode 27 also gives coding agents the tools to validate their own work, so they can run autonomously for longer, such as writing and running tests, trying ideas in isolation with Playgrounds, checking visual changes with previews, and interacting with the simulator in the new Device Hub.

Gemini is also not the only player in Xcode 27's new ecosystem. Developers can also easily leverage models of their choice, like Claude and Gemini, or those from any other provider that implements the new language model protocol. With plug-ins, developers can extend Xcode with custom skills, bring in the tools they use every day through the Model Context Protocol, and connect any agent compatible with the Agent Client Protocol. GitHub and Figma are the first to offer installation between their tools and Xcode.

## Two tiers, one API key

Authentication is split into two paths depending on your scale:

- **Individual developers:** Obtain a self-serve Gemini API key directly from Google AI Studio, which features both a free tier for getting started and a paid tier for more advanced models and higher volumes.
- **Enterprise developers:** Use the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform to obtain an API key, which enables development teams to leverage their organization's guaranteed dedicated corporate quotas and data privacy parameters.

## What this actually unlocks

The practical use cases are where this gets interesting. The hybrid local/cloud model opens up a class of agentic apps that simply could not be built cleanly before:

- **Heavy reasoning tasks:** Offload complex multi-step planning or long-context summarization to Gemini in the cloud while keeping sensitive user data processed on-device with Apple's models.
- **Cost-aware inference:** Route simple, fast queries to the on-device model (free, low-latency) and escalate to Gemini only when the task demands it.
- **Agentic workflows:** One of the biggest benefits of the integration is support for next-generation agentic applications. Agentic AI systems can understand context, plan tasks, make decisions, and execute multi-step actions on behalf of users.
- **No backend required:** Firebase AI Logic lets you add Gemini to your apps without managing backend servers.

## The bigger picture

The announcement marks another major collaboration between Google and Apple following the recent introduction of Gemini-powered Siri AI at WWDC 2026. But the developer-facing integration is arguably more significant for the ecosystem. As competition intensifies among AI platforms, integrations like this highlight a broader industry trend: developers increasingly want flexibility to choose the best AI models while maintaining native platform experiences.

The real shift here is architectural. Apple has moved from a closed, Apple-only model framework to an open protocol where any provider -- Google, Anthropic, or others -- can compete on capability while the developer writes the same Swift code either way. Developer betas for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27, and Xcode 27 are available at developer.apple.com starting today. The [Firebase AI Logic preview](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/technology/developers-tools/bringing-gemini-models-to-apple-developers/) for the Foundation Models integration is also live now.
