# DeepWiki-Open Turns Any Codebase Into a Browsable Wiki With 17K Stars

> An open-source clone of Devin's DeepWiki turns any Git repo into an interactive, AI-generated wiki with diagrams, chat, and codemaps.

Reading an unfamiliar codebase is one of the most tedious parts of software work, and most repositories ship with a README that stops well short of explaining how the pieces actually fit together. [DeepWiki-Open](https://github.com/AsyncFuncAI/deepwiki-open) tries to fix that by pointing an LLM at a repo and generating a navigable wiki, complete with architecture diagrams and a chat interface. It now has more than 17,000 GitHub stars.

The project is a community reimplementation of Cognition's closed-source DeepWiki, built by developer Sj Ng after the original launched. [In a Medium post](https://medium.com/@sjng/deepwiki-why-i-open-sourced-an-ai-powered-wiki-generator-b67b624e4679), the author frames it as a shift in how documentation gets produced: rather than treating docs as a manual burden, developers can lean on AI to generate them, with DeepWiki-Open as an early step. The repo is MIT-licensed and self-hostable, which is the main reason it took off.

## From repo URL to browsable wiki

Point it at any GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket URL and the pipeline takes over. The system clones the project, builds semantic embeddings of the codebase, extracts architecture and relationships, generates human-readable documentation, and produces visual diagrams to explain complex structure. Everything gets stitched into a wiki you can browse page by page.
