# CYGNET Stops Broken AI Database Queries Before They Crash Neo4j

> CYGNET puts a pre-execution gate between LLM agents and Neo4j, catching 100% of structural Cypher errors before they hit production — at just 5.6 ms overhead.

Every team building LLM agents over a knowledge graph hits the same wall: the model generates a Cypher query, it crashes the database, and the agent has no idea why. [CYGNET](https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.04645) (Cypher Gate for Neural Execution Triage and Cost Containment) is a new system that inserts a validation and correction layer between the LLM and a production Neo4j database, stopping bad queries before they ever execute.

## The query problem nobody talks about

Language models acting as agents over knowledge graphs generate Cypher queries that fail structurally (crashing at the database) or semantically (executing but returning wrong results). These are two very different failure modes. A structural failure is loud , the database throws an error. A semantic failure is silent , the query runs fine but returns the wrong answer.

The industry has been building LLM-to-graph pipelines at pace. Despite decades of research on knowledge graphs and knowledge base question answering, leading LLM frameworks like LangChain and LlamaIndex have only minimal support for retrieval from modern encyclopedic knowledge graphs like Wikidata. Meanwhile, an LLM has no inherent concept of computational cost, meaning it can inadvertently generate a runaway query , like a massive Cartesian product or a deep traversal across millions of nodes , that could stall the entire system. The existing tooling mostly reacts after the damage is done.

AGENTiGraph, one of the closest prior systems, generates Cypher for Neo4j through LLM agents but provides no structural validation, cost gating, or error vocabulary, and its 9.55% execution failure rate (on a 3500-query test set) includes structural errors that a pre-execution gate could catch. CYGNET was built to close that gap.
