# Comic Translate v2.8.0 Translates Manga 5x Faster With Half the Size

[Comic Translate](https://github.com/ogkalu2/comic-translate), the open-source desktop app by ogkalu2 that uses frontier LLMs to translate manga, manhwa, webtoons, and Western comics, has shipped v2.8.0 with its most impactful performance update yet. The headline change: pipeline and default model changes that make per-image translation roughly 4 to 5 times faster than before.

## Why this tool exists at all

Many automatic manga translators exist, but very few properly support comics of other kinds in other languages. Comic Translate was built to leverage the capabilities of state-of-the-art LLMs like GPT to translate comics from all over the world. The core bet is a simple one: for a couple dozen languages, the best machine translator is not Google Translate, Papago, or even DeepL, but a SOTA LLM like GPT-4, and by far. This is especially apparent for distant language pairs like Korean-English or Japanese-English, where other translators still often devolve into gibberish.

The app currently supports translating comics from English, Korean, Japanese, French, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian, and can translate to those languages and more. Supported input formats span the full range of comic file types: images, PDFs, EPUBs, CBR, and CBZ archives.
